I have family at Alamosa, 20 miles from there.

Actually the sand is wind blown and drops to the ground as the winds lift over tbe mountains in the background. The unique situation earned it National Park status.

I’ve driven by it twice and never had time in schedule to stop.

If you do, on the drive in you'll see a siqn for Zappata Falls, gravel road to the right. Check it out. 1/2 mile drive, 1/4 mile walk. The falls is in a large crevice. You can wade to the base. 100ft tall at least. Pretty dramatic.

The dunes have a soothing effect on people. Very common to see walkers headed to the top.

I知 from SE Ohio and never heard of lake hope state park. I致e backpacked in nearby zelaski.

lol...that's kinda funny, as Lake Hope is smack in the middle of Zaleski State Forest! The lake itself lies just west of the backpack trail. Check it out on google maps, and prepare to chuckle!

This is such a great thread!! I love seeing pictures of different places and how other people see things.

Here are a few pics that I took at my place. I use a Canon SX50 point and shoot camera. I like that there are no lenses to change out, you just keep zooming in and play with the focus. Nothing could be easier!!!

I checked it out. Can’t believe I never heard of it.
I backpacked in that area around 1980. Trains still used the moonville tunnel line. We could hear the trains.

That sounds about right. They pulled the tracks in '88, and the initiative to make it into a multipurpose rail-trail started in the late 90's I believe. The section of trail where the tunnel lies is pretty popular these days, with a big Halloween bash at midnight the last several years, due to all the ghost stories from the area. Pretty creepy place after dark, when no one else is there.
