I'm guessing the switch activated 4WD adds a thousand bucks to the repair cost of the system. Saw a Andrew Camaratta video where a customers expensive (electronic) p/u would not perform in off road conditions on account of the dash mounted system. Don't fully understand what that was about, but Camaratta who uses his truck for work day in and day out will have no part of the electronic junk.

Most people now don't know the proper procedure to engage/disengage a old school 4x4. They need a switch activated 4x4 or AWD so they don't get confused or tear up the t-case. I have seen people still make a good attempt at it though.

I wish I had the floor lever. Not that my 08 Sierra has given me trouble, except that I have forgotten it is in 4wd and headed out on a long highway trip, as there is NO dash display. Only a pinprick LED on the actual knob, in a location you can't see while driving.

Ha! That is one reason I bought my 2013 Sierra. It has the floor 4x4 lever, steel front control arms, and iron engine block. It might be my last truck.

The hard start long crank is a standard feature on on the gm gasser DI motors especially the 5.3 and 6.2 my 2014 with conventional gas cap always had an extended crank. There are TSB's saying this is normal. One of the first times my wife rode in it my wife said whats wrong with this truck it sounds like an old da-da-dodge

That's good to know. I won't be so concerned about getting stranded on some woods road 15 miles from cell phone coverage.

Floor activated 4wd and a split bench seat with folding armrest would be part of my ideal truck. That, and cloth seats that ARE SOFT CLOTH, not a vinyl tablecloth!

My Silverado has a lever on the floor, my Ranger has a knob on the dash. They both make the truck go into 4WD, so I'm happy. The only problem I've ever had since companies did away with the fancy vacuum locking front ends was when the shifter got bunged up on one of my company trucks and it got stuck in 4 lo... I could move the lever back and forth all day long but nothing happened. I was someplace north of east bumstead and had to crawl underneath the truck to shift it into Hi range... I set the brake first and trigged both sides of all 4 tires. There's no way I was going to let that truck roll over me!

A friend once worked in a tranny shop and knew his way around the linkages. He once got blocked in, crawled under that persons car and disconnected the linkage, put the car in neutral and pushed it out of the way. Not connecting it again was the punishment for the offence! lol

I made arrangements for service on my new 1984 Ranger including adjusting the lifters. I left my spare keys panning to drop it off on Monday and pick it up when I got back in town on Friday. The service writer told me to leave it in front of the bay door so that they would be able to find it.

Then he went on vacation.

The following week I got a ride down to pick it up, and the work hadn't been done because nobody there had a clue what it was in for. They didn't see the keys, so had to move it out of the way with a wrecker. At least they knew where it was. :D

What makes a manual 4WD lever better? Just another mechanical linkage to get in the way or become rusty and bind or have something stupid happen like a retaining clip fall out (had that happen on an old Jeep...had to drive 10 mi in 4lo to a garage where they could pop it back in enough to get it back into 2wd...I didn't have any tools with me at the time). Sheesh, my '02 Dakota has an electronic transfer case and it's never given me a bit of trouble.
Curiously, why do you call your truck the taco wagon?

Ever single 4x4 With a manual lever for 4 wheel drive had never left me stranded in the snow or muck by not being able to get it into 4 wheel drive.
On the other hand I have to this point only owned 1 with an electronic switch that hasn稚 left me stuck in some kind of unsightly weather when the 4 wheel drive just refused to engage. My GMC was the absolute worst as that would only engage on a warm summer day if the road was hot flat and smooth. On a cold rainy day, a snowy day, or anytime the going got tuff it would simply leave me stranded spinning just the back wheels. Replaced the mechanism 3 times over the years and it would work for a few months then start giving fits again.
Given the choice I will take a manual lever any day of the week, if it lost a clip or pin on a cold snowy day I could reach under with a plier or vise grip and engage 4 wheel drive and get home without having to freeze my b off walking miles and having to go tow it home with an other truck.
Most of my friends have had problems with the electronic engagement also but no one seems to be able to remember a time when they couldn稚 get thier lever to work except for one friend who wrecked his truck in 2x2 and then later figured his frame was actually bent. Problem with that comparison is most of today痴 trucks would not have even run after that accident but he got pulled out and drove home with a vice grip hanging on the linkage and 4x4 working.

^^Sounds like the front axle actuator needed replacing. I know they made manual cable operated kits too.
