The tractor has a 100kW drive motor and 200kW for powering implements and they run 2.5kV in the cable. To put in perspective as to how large your service drop has to be, 240V requires 1250A for 300kW. One needs 1500A (only use 80% for 100% duty cycle) service in the field just to power one tractor.

At 2500V they only need 120A in the wire strewn across the field. A flexible 1000m cable for 120A at 100% duty cycle is going to be at least $40,000. And how often to replace or repair from dragging it around?
Aren't there German coal strip-mines that already use this technology? They don't use as long cords, but then I doubt every farmer would buy the full 1,000 meter spool.

Many years ago as a young man working in underground mines in Co. There were small loaders, called mucking machines, that were corded electric, with a reel and fairly long cord. They were used to load small rail cars with the ore that had been blasted from the mining area and worked real well. As I recall they were called scoopys. The reel was spring loaded, much like an air hose reel and really pretty problem free considering the conditions they were worked in. The mines were always wet and pretty dusty when working fresh shot rock.

EV vs ICE vehicles: how much energy is wasted? FLIR T1K thermal camera at FC Live

This shows the hot spot is the engine in an ICE car and the battery in the EV. No surprise but I still found it interesting. Both radiate a lot of heat.

Once again, energy is not wasted unless there is a means of using it for something. There is the matter of availability which is closely related to practicality. You did not find it practical to drive your LEAF home so you trailered it. Therefore the fuel was not wasted because it got a job done for an acceptable cost. How much time, effort, and cost would you have incurred to rent an EV delivered to your home to drive to buy your LEAF and then drive both LEAFs back?

I found the video a bit off putting, as she seemed to spend more time obsessing over IR thermal image technology than on the technical differences between the 2 automobile technologies. I guess she has never used an imager before.

It looks like liquid lava flowing!

Normally we expect tires to be black, but they look white!

What does it cost to charge an electriic vehicle? How long does it take? Do they rate them in $ per kWh?

Never mind, just did a local dealer search of the leaf. All over $42k. I can buy a equivalent size gasser for half, and come out way ahead.

I think it's interesting, at a minimum. He's pushing the innovation and that's a good thing.

It looks like something out of Mad Max, I do like that!

IMHO, Tesla needs to settle down and generate profit. They can't continue to lose money indefinitely. I would be nervous about buying a high-priced product when I don't even have good reason to believe the company will exist in ten years.

And that's not a pickup truck.
