I recently purchased a circa 1953 New Holland 331 manure spreader and replacing it's double "z" channel axle assembly, due to rust, with 4" x 6" x 0.25" tube. I want to bring in the tread to match my tractor tread because I will be using it to lay straw on my garlic rows after planting. If I just needed it to sling poop, I would have bought a monkey, right?

I've removed the back beater and welding up a diverter shield for the hind end, so the straw drops straight down. Jones Engineering and Claas making rigs to lay straw on carrots for overwinter in-ground carrot storage but they're 40 to 60 feet long. We are a small gourmet garlic farm of a few acres and don't have a 275+hp or room to turn one of those giants. Maybe one day. Looks fun! But, back to the tread issue. Along the length of the left side is the pto transfer shaft. Because of this shaft, that side of the original axle protruded out further than the right side so the shaft runs between the tire and the bed. To squeeze the tread I need the tire to run under the shaft. I'm prepared to lift the axle up high enough to clear under the shaft, but first I wanted to ask the TBN community this:

Can a 225/35R20 passenger tire fit the 20-8 implement rim?

Please input.

I picked a 225/35r20 tire at random to see what rim width it calls for and it is between 7 and 9 inches. So, implication is yes it would fit, but I'd check load ratings etc as well. I have to assume the 20" car tire diameter is the same as a 20" ag rim diameter, but I don't know that for sure.

The load rating is 1323 lbs. per tire x 2= 2646. Implement weight= 1300 lbs. Maximum input load would be one 3'x4'x8' straw square bale at 1200 lbs. So, I guess I'm good there. Passenger tire at the 35 ratio is 27" overall diameter versus the 37" OTR trailer tires on it now. Thank you so much for the input! I'm buying tires. BTW, where did you find the info rim width requirements? That is very good info to have!

I included a link, but I see that it says "Forbidden". It's a link to discount tire and I selected the "select tire by size" and picked a tire at random. Half way down the page it shows "Rim Width Range". Another web site is "Tire Rack" and they show the specs in a more comparable manner. NOTE: Not all tires of the same size will mount on the same rims. Check your tire specs first. I see one at 7.5" - 9" and another at 7" - 8". For your situation, you're probably good, but you should verify it with the folks you buy the tire from.

The reality is tire weight ratings probably arent super relevant for farm impliments. Thise numbers assume 75mph travel. Different & probably more extreme forces than farm uses. If you ever tow a farm impliment that fast you are crazy. "Overloading" them at 5-15mph is going to have a low impact failure mode. Annoying but not dangerous.

A single axle isnt going to see the extreme sidewall loading a double or triple axle will get on turning. It's not really smart to put car tires on a double axle for that reason. Not that it applies here.

I would say that 70% of our light implements and wagons are on used car and pickup tires.
Some are 2 ply some 4 ply and on the bales hay wagons we like to find 6 ply pickup tires.

I should have added that self unloading wagons that get used the most and carry the heaviest loads do get good tires,
one of them actually runs on 10.00-20's the others are 16 inch heavy duty implement tires.

If you could see the tires farmers use around here you wouldn't question it a bit. If it's dry rotted, threads showing, and leaks that just means it needs a tube. Even the farm trucks with ag plates that actually do more than 10 mph have questionable equipment. If you aren't sure go to a local salvage yard. They often have lots of 3/4 worn tires they have no use for. Most likely they will have a tire machine and can even swap them over for you.
