Cats kill well over one billion (!) birds annually in the US. If you don't care... you don't care - and I get their anti-rodent utility.

When we moved her 30+ years ago there were lots of quail. Entertaining as **** watching them march single-file along the porch rail, or herding 20 fluff-balls through the field. Then neighbors arrived with six cats. Haven't seen or heard a quail in 20 years :(

Z.

I dispute that 1 billion number. No way anyone can figure that out.
However if the neighbors moved in with a dog or two would the results have been the same?
I lived in a small neighborhood before moving to the country and one neighbor poisoned on of our cats because it kept getting on their cars and leaving cat prints. I get that too.
I'm just glad cats are free.

Do you mean that some trustworthy individual did NOT go out and count each of those billions of birds???
:D

Absolutely correct tradosaurus -- "well over one billion" birds killed by cats per year is absurdly without any foundation and impossible for anyone to prove, disprove, or verify. It really does not matter what zoltanthegypsy's source was, it is simply nonsense as seen by any thinking person. While I am preaching, the internet is so full of falsehoods and made up data I find it refreshing that we on TBN tend to be a lot less like that.

By the way, if you want to waste some rainy day time, go to the reference listed as zoltanthegypsy's source. What a crock of nonsense ! Imagine a PhD thesis including high level statistician math methods (with which I am very familiar) all applied to pure speculative data so flimsy it is just silly. Read some of the comments after the article at that referenced website. Good for laughs.

Corn gluten pet-safe organics are encroaching on the neuro-toxins and coagulants. I rarely go a week without emptying either size Tomcat black snap trap. Some years I get a lot of red squirrels in the large traps, some year all chipmunks. Both poop al over and must go. Mice are regular victims all year long to my brace of traps. Usually 3 small and 2 large in a close 'array'.

I suggest that peanut butter on anything but the roller of a bucket trap is just ant bait, draws 'em aplenty, goes stale, or becomes a mess when emptying mice and resetting.

Black oil sunflower seeds, guys & gals. Indefinite shelf life, clean, no non-target or secondary kills. Forget the 'bait cup' unless you're trapping whiskers. Flick seeds to the back of the trap. Get their body IN the trap and ON the trigger, and catch more than nose-hairs.

btw, I do put lanyards on traps to reduce crawl offs or having my kill stolen by something larger. (= Fewer stinky corpses in hidden corners.)

they are when one kills your 9 year old nephews pet duck by chewing off the head, and he goes out to feed his duck, and sees it!!. cats kill for fun!!..

Agree that cats should be house cats since they are otherwise artificially introduced into nature. Same as dogs should not be left to roam.

When I was 12 years old I was told to help my Grandmother butcher chickens. I subsequently removed the heads of the chickens with a hatchet. I lived on a farm and was taught that the chickens and other livestock had a purpose to provide food. We had ducks and they were butchered for food. I enjoyed them but knew that they would eventually become food. Last I knew I did not grow up to become a serial killer.
