Selling used - tractorhouse vs ebay vs Clist

It must be a regional thing, I've had 0% success rate selling to people who texted or emailed about an item, yet every time somebody took the time to pick up the phone they ended up buying what I was offering. When I sold my 3 pth BH the guy asked me a few questions then asked what my lowest price was as he was about 3 hours away. We agreed on a price then he asked if I would take a check, it was Sunday and no banks were open. I agreed, then did an online search before he got there to make sure that he was who he said he was.

I swear there are guys that just E-Mail to see if they can get t the price down and you never hear from them again. I don't think that has ever happened on the phone.

TBH I am somewhat guilty of this. Difference is Im not a flake. If I inquire I am interested. Usually if the person isn't willing to come to my number by e mail or such then I am not waisting my time with a trip, saves me time

I guess you Maine folk are a bit more trusting than I am.
I bought my 2006 L48 TLB last June from a guy on Little Deer Isle (not that far from you I think)
I did not even see the machine (CL), but agreed on a price over the phone, after having a long ago engineering college classmate (he lives on Deer Isle), look at it for me.
I mailed the seller a bank check for 20% ($6,400), and agreed that I would bring a $25,600 bank check at pickup, in two weeks (350 miles away).

When I picked up the machine I asked if he had considered what might have happened if I had canceled/stopped the $25,600 bank check.
I could have picked up the TLB, cancelled the $25,600 check, and been 350 miles down the road with his $32,000 machine.
Tractors do not have titles.
All he really knew he that he had for sure was my $6,400 deposit.

He told me that he is a contractor (small time builder), and had only been stuck once.
Wow! Just the potential for a $25,600 sticking would be a bit worrisome for me!
All that said: He was a great guy, who now has Parkinsons disease, so could not use the TLB
Kubota L48 had only 250.9 hours, 3rd function/diverter/hydraulic SSQA/3 rear remotes/11' backhoe/hydraulic thumb/QA hoe bucket, even a horn. He was the original owner.

I am now the 2nd owner.......a 79 year old very happy camper, with an absolutely delightful end of life toy!

What's her name?

I found that people that sheepishly ask if that price is firm are the real deal and people that boldly beat down your price are usually FOS!

It irks me when guys start off with "whats your lowest price?" I put that in the ad. Serious people have questions about the thing I'm selling, come look at it, then we get to price. Which won't be far off my asking price because I did my homework before I put it up for sale and priced it appropriately.

I guess you could say, if a meteorite was heading for the earth, I will just about give it away, but since that's not happening, I pretty much want my asking price. I ALWAYS give a little discount, sometimes even when they don't ask for it.

"whats your lowest price?" means you may be asking too much for the area you are selling in, not everybody is rich!!.. you're not really going to get rich New Yorkers to travel all the way to California to buy something they can get locally.. the old " I want 1 million dollars because, because because" don't always work..

Just had that happen today. Guy set it up pretty good 1st call. Scheduled time to come look, then about 10 minutes before being late called to apologize and say he had been busy talking about it with his “expert” who recommended that it would be a good deal at 25% less, offering bogus reasons why (expert never saw item) then he went back to money issues. Of course we made appointment based on his thinking my price was good and I said I could be a bit flexible. He was coming with a downpayment.
I did offer a counter, but a tad higher than his expert. I doubt I’ll hear back, especially after texting him links showing his expert was taking advantage of him (but I didn’t say that).

Setting a price on something used isn’t usually an exact science. I research and make my best guess, but it’s not cast in stone. A offer in the neighborhood isn’t insulting and likely acceptable. It’s the lowball, unsupportable numbers that get me. And I don’t mind dropping a bit just to be nice.
When buying, I try to get a feel for what price should be. if I answer an ad and seller can’t explain his higher price, I just say Thanks and move on.
