"PubMed lists 92 articles on diatomaceous earth, but none of them support the health claims that have been made. A PubMed search for the health benefits of silicon was equally unrewarding. One article found a decrease in litter pH when silicon was added to the feed of turkeys; nice to know! One review article said compelling data [compelling to whom?] suggest that silica is essential for health although no RDI has been established.?

. . . .a nutrient rich diet with adequate fruits and vegetables will generally meet skeletal needs in healthy individuals."

"The health claims

Taken internally, it is said to help promote healthier hair, skin, nails, gums, bones, and joints; support healthy digestion, improve absorption of nutrients, regularize bowel movements, and detoxify the digestive system; strengthen cartilage and reduce joint pain; assist in weight loss; promote healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure; and increase energy. "

All I can say is DE has worked for me. I have no way to measure bone strength, but I have had several bad falls outside that usually break bones in people my age (79).

"No thank you!

Is it worth trying? I can’t rule out the possibility that it might work for some indications, but without proper controlled clinical studies we have no way of knowing. I can’t prove that it doesn’t work or that it is unsafe, but in my opinion there is no credible basis for recommending dietary supplementation with diatomaceous earth. Taking it would amount to offering yourself as a guinea pig in an uncontrolled experiment and sandpapering your intestines with an industrial abrasive on the strength of testimonials. I’ll pass."

I am truly glad it is specifically working for you. There may be a reason you specifically need it. Like the article says the nutrients are found in fruits and vegetables maybe you are not eating enough of the right kind or maybe your body is not metabolizing it. Lots of labs and a detailed diet diary examined by a Dietitian would be needed to find the cause of your ailments and your need for this supplement. I would not want to worry about future intestine problems from abrasion.

I have very hard fingernails and have never broken a bone and I'm plant based, but if I were to start a thread and recommend my diet on TBN I would back it with studies, which there are actually many. I just need to take the time to reference every claim I make with the study/studies available for critique for each claim.

The last dirt I ate was provided by my sister in the form of "Mud Pies". This was in about 1960. They were not good.

Yep, I remember Mud Pies.

I think "and sandpapering your intestines with an industrial abrasive" is a bit of an exaggeration.

I never experienced any of the detoxification that is mentioned on the forums.

Where do you put it?
You sprinkle it on the ground around the plants and or on the base of the plants so that they have to crawl through it to get to the plants.

Does watering not wash it away?

Does watering not wash it away?
That would depend on how you water and where you put the water.
Getting wet will not hurt it, but it will wash the band of Diatomaceous Earth away.
