I have a JD 4105, which is pretty close to the specs for the 4044M,,

I also have the JD 390,, I use it on a different tractor,, but, for grins,, one day I put it on the 4105,,

Well,, that is a pretty useless combination,, I had to have over 300 pounds of front end weights to even drive the tractor at all.

I could not find the weight of the 370 or the 390 on the Deere website,, but the specs did show the housing on both are the same thickness,,

In my opinion,, I think the JD 370 mower should be used on a slightly larger tractor than the 4044M,,,
IIRC, my JD390 is about 1300 lbs.

So I got a yanmar 2420 back before Christmas and starting to look at flails for cutting some margins on my property. Back 10 acres is under lease for row crop but I keep the fence lines clear along with a terrace line.

Previously I ran a 6ft Ford 917 on a Boomer 50 so I have some experience.

Any suggestions on brand, type and size to look for. Would prefer used but seems like most of the ones around me are on the larger side and I'm not sure the little yanmar can cope.

If you stay on top of it your new machine should be able to handle a 4-5 foot flail. Not many used 4 foot units out there, but I know there are used 5 foot units available. I know the 917 comes in a 5 foot because I had one and I see them out there. Otherwise a new Caroni 4 foot would be a decent choice. Stick to the course cut but avoid the hammers. I used the 5 foot 917 behind a 24HP Yanmar (SA424) and it did okay as long as I wasn't trying to cut anything over 2 feet tall. Even then I went slow and it still worked.

All Caroni rotors have 4 rows of cutters. AgriSupply offeres the 47" and 59" Caroni with the "F" rotor which has twice as many blades. It will leave a nicer finish, but may hog a bit more power if you try to cut tall grass. You can contact AgriSupply to see if you can order the "B" rotor in the smaller units. Look at the Caroni website to determine which model you'd like before contacting AgriSupply. Each has it's advantages.

Yes seeing your pictures will still be on topic so no worries there.

So, here ya go. The big chunk of the 3 acre plot.....

One of our OES is sitting next the GN - I'll easily presume drooling in anticipation of getting to bark @ & chew on the sprinkler heads when they activate. The 2 trench's are the expansion of 2 more heads for septic system irrigation.

As with everything else, I do as much as I can, when I can & where I can. Chipping away at the iceberg is a lifespan activity.

So I just tried to see what's in the Birmingham & surrounding area of Craigslist..... I selected "nearby" & then check marked 3-4 specific folders, here is what I see. Did I help or am I off target?

Just be careful around fence line, nothing rolls up loose wire like a flail mower. I have spent more time cutting wire from the ends of my rotor than I care to admit. I now will not cut a new area unless I am positive there is no wire there. I cannot stress this enough. Good luck with your purchase, sorry I can't help you with picking a mower. My dandl is 9' wide and it is the only flail I have any experience with.
About 2 seconds max from what's that noise or movement to a total stall most of the time. Both those incidents sucked. The wire rope was worse than the fence wire though as it was to squishy for bolt cutters to cut well.20190629_123641.jpg20190629_131356.jpg20190629_124509.jpg20180718_191806.jpg20180718_192936.jpg20180719_175911.jpg

Barbed is way more fun than barbless, but neither of those looks like as much fun as that cable. You must have gotten to play for hours. I am so glad I didn't get to have that much fun.

I'm more Huntsville area but it's showing most of the same stuff. There's a few on Facebook but only 1 <6ft and the place wants nearly $2k in "unknown operating condition". It's a Ford 917 but dang that's the same price as a new caroni from what I can tell

Ok, so I did a little research on your tractor and the 4044M and here is what I found out. The 4105 was a tractor that Deere offered between the years of 2008-2014 and was a cross between a 3 series and a 4 series tractor in terms of it's frame size and horsepower. Deere published a implement guide/brochure that has a compatibility chart for all the implements John Deere. If you look at the flail mower page you will see your tractor and the one that I am looking at as being compatible for the 370 flail mower. Interestingly enough though it doesn't list either yours or mine as being compatible for the 390 flail but it does show the next two models up in the current 4 series as being compatible which are the same frame size as the 4044M. So according to Deere the current 4 series frame can handle the 390 flail mower but they are showing that you need the extra hp of the 4052M or 4066M to of course power it. You are right in saying the specs are close but they are also very different at the same time. For example, your tractor has a 3 cylinder engine and a shorter wheelbase and length where the 4044M has a 4 cylinder engine, 600 additional lbs of rear lift capacity and is wider in the rear. It also weighs 783 lbs more then yours does. I watched a video of the 4105 on Good Works Tractors and it appears that the rear end is cast aluminum or steel unlike the current 4 series which is cast iron. However, I find it interesting how a slightly smaller tractor can differ so much in stability. :scratchchin:
