A belt sander or grinder does an outstanding job as a knife sharpener. Use the slack part of the belt to get a nice curved edge as in the illustration posted above. Probably most people on this board already have one or two.
That's a good idea on the slack belt.

An upside down hand-held belt sander, or better yet a benchtop belt sander, works great for restoring the bevel on an old neglected axe. I inherited several and this brought them back to being real tools.

If you use your knives, they'll need to be frequently resharpened. If you go to a meat locker, you'll see the guys resharpened them after breaks and what not. I sharp knife is your friend!

Not knives but for my chisels and planes I use the veritas sharpener with a microbevel on a scary sharp system which is just wet and dry glued to heavy glass, the results are lethal.

I keep this in the kitchen for bringing a knife edge almost back to good and sharp - Accusharp https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006PTLPC2/ref=dp_cerb_1

Then about once a year, all the knives get sharpened with a whetstone.
I used to get fancy with whetstones, etc, then saw this device rated #1 by on America's Test Kitchen on TV (PBS) one time. They tend to be real clever/frugal about their testing and recommendations (like farmers) and had no problem recommending a low cost hardware store sharpener over fancier and more expensive products. It's been working great for us for many years.
Man you guys are leading me off into temptation. :)

I just ordered the Accusharp combo. For knife, plus the single edge tool - for scissors, garden shears. Garden hoe maybe? We have a wavy bread knife I've been maintaining with a round file for years, a nuisance. When I saw the Accusharp can do this knife in a moment, I was sold on it.

Today I used an antique drawknife to trim the top of a sticking door without removing it. I hope the Accusharp single edge sharpener works as well as a traditional stone for touching up this tool.

To me a knife is sharp when U can shave with it!
And for me that calls for using an old fashioned oilstone.

I purchased an old water cooled, slow speed electric knife sharpner off eBay. Works perfectly to sharpen knives and re-establish proper bevels. Also, received a Work Sharp for Christmas but haven't tried it yet.
