I have an old (40 years) log splitter that was hand built. a couple of weeks ago i replaced the carburetor with an aftermarket and started first pull. its a tecumseh engine 4hp and i need to figure out how to set the throttle for wide open at the engine maximum RPM 3200, but have not idea how to check rpm. i do have an old Mac engine tester that has analog volt-ohm-rpm-dwell for multi cylinder engines. 4-6-8 cylinder switch and 3 leads, black-white for battery hook up and white lead for tach.

is there any way to check rpm with this meter on a single cylinder small engine or will i have to purchase something like a tiny tach or cheap tach like under $20 dollars?

i would appreciate any help in this matter. if i can get the rpm high enough this log splitter will split some large logs with a little finesse.

thank you for looking and any help

Does it work pretty good without stalling? My experience is the 5.5-6 hp motors are a little underpowered for the “standard” 11 gpm two stage pump. I could only get 2200 psi out of a 5.5 hp Honda with a 11 gpm 2 stage before it stalled. I had a second splitter with another 5.5 hp Honda and a 11 gpm 2 stage pump. I never checked the pressure on it but I know if you adjusted the relief too high it would stall.

Do you have one of those desk top fluorescent lamps

i can get one of those desktop lamps. would one of those under counted fluorescent 24" lights work also? something to do with attaching power cord to spark plug? 60 cycles per second? just guessing.

please tell me more!

no, it bogs down and takes longer to split but does good for the little i use it. could use 8hp-10hp i think

Shine it on the crankshaft/coupler etc. At 3600rpm the shaft will appear stationary .

Have cell phone?.... IF so get optical tachometer app... All you need is a small white patch on any shaft or pulley against a dark surface for it to work....
