Propane generator regulator questions

Any tips or tricks on setting the pressure?
Assuming that regulator is adjustable, You would need to have the generator running and have your inches of wc gauge connected on the inlet, and then the outlet side of the regulator and turn in (clockwise) on the adjustment screw.
Your manual should state what the supply pressure should be while the engine is running

You also need to know if your tank regulator is supplying inches of wc, or psi

If the orifice is larger, It could supply too much gas and cause the motor to flood . Personally, I would stay with the factory recommended orifice

The regulator will still limit the gas supplied to the pressure it's set to so it won't flood the engine but a larger orifice will make the output pressure less stable as the regulator will cycle open and closed more often to maintain pressure. With the difference in size here it's not likely to be an issue however as he could swap the orifice with the original to keep it as original as possible which is always best.

Swapping orifices is generally very straightforward.

If you do buy another regulator, I can't suggest strongly enough that you get a UL listed one - and make sure it's really UL listed and that that's not just on the casting. I'm all for getting cheap stuff until it comes to gas or lots of electricity.

If you don't, bad things could happen with insurance after a fire.

Looks to me that what you're looking for is a "model KN" regulator. Getting a real IMPCO one may cost a few more dollars but I don't think you're looking even at $100. (example $73).

Note that you'll see items described as "for IMPCO ..." and what this means is "hypothetically the same as IMPCO but not IMPCO".

Assuming this one is legit and not a copy (never know with amz, and I'm not sure if there are copies with the UL stamp of the century version), it's a little more pricey but supposedly has 3 in stock: (link $100).

Yep, I just drilled out orifices for 3 propane fired furnaces due to the customer changing over to natural gas. Swapping them would be much easier than drilling them, then clocking the meter to make sure they were correctly fired
