Hydraulic Pump and Motor Torque Requirements

Remote cable operated throttle is done all the time.
Some things such as outboard motors can have very long throttle control cables. You may be able to buy a kit from a marine suppler.

A soft metal shear pin in the drive would be a good idea, if there is not already one there.
But having to stop work and continually replace busted shear pins can be annoying.
A much nicer but more expensive solution would be an adjustable slipping clutch.

Would a shear bolt be needed with a belt drive system?

Seems like that would be very easy to damage with a machine this size. Those brush hogs are designed more to be pulled by an ATV or small tractor rather than being attached to the front of a machine that can lift over 4000 lbs.

According to the owner of the R410 in post #1:

The brush hog is 5 ft. wide and it'll be used to cut tall grass and light brush, nothing real thick.

With maybe 20Hp behind it and a big flywheel on the engine, if it hits a stump, its going to stop instantly and something somewhere is going to break for sure. If the belts are over designed, and adjusted loose enough to slip, that might work. But Vee belts are designed to wedge, and may just as easily grab.

I'm not talking about damaging it due to what it's cutting, but rather due to bumping into something. It would be rather easy to crush a lightweight brush hog like that against the first stump I didn't see. My brother has one of those tow behind ATV brush hogs. Even if it was cutting light brush, I don't think it'd hold up to being attached to a machine this size. Plus, the ones you linked to are only 3.5 or 4 feet wide. The machine is about 5.5 wide. As it is, the 5 ft. brushhog I have is going to be a little annoying at times because it's narrower than the loader. Definitely wouldn't want to go even narrower than that.
