Synthetic vs Mineral Oil in my Tacoma

These days I tend to just use WalMart Full Synthetic for quality and price across the board. Most all motor oil today is functionally about the same if it meets the engine manual specs.

Very wise. Great product, great value! Warren Dist. packages the SuperTech brand and it痴 the exact, same product as many name brand oils, just a different bottle and lower price!

Not really. That is what the Synthetic Apologists Society would have you think. Wants you to be happy to spoil your precious engine with "only the best, synthetic!"

Ford, GM, Fiat/Chrysler, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, everyone who is anyone publishes supplemental requirements over and above the usual SAE/API, ACEA, JASO, etc.

For example my F-150's 2.7EB engine requires oil which meets Ford specification WSS-M2C946-B1. Among other things is said to address carbon buildup on backside of intake valves (a problem with direct-injection engines because gasoline never gets to wash the backsides) and some sort of lubrication issue with the "phasers" used to alter valve timing. And for instance, not all Mobil-1 5W-30 oils meet this spec.

"Synthetic" manufacture does not automatically make a superior motor oil. An oil must be designed for purpose else it is not as good as one which is designed for purpose.

I would have thought that Mobil 1 of anyone would be up to date. Any more information you can offer?

What more is there to say? Research the requirements of your engine. The above is printed on something like page 419 of my owners manual. Then shop for oils meeting the spec. IIRC the base $25.88 Walmart Mobil-1 did not. The next level up did.

Likewise among those who get all their information from 30 second TV commercials it is automatically assumed all synthetic motor oils last longer than any refined motor oil. Synthetic processes can produce a superior motor oil but use of synthetic processes is no assurance of a superior motor oil. The designer has to know what constitutes a superior oil, and has to be willing to make the effort.

ACEA publishes requirements for extended drain intervals common in Europe. Once again not all Mobil-1 at Walmart meets these specifications. Look for ACEA A5/B5 but be ware ACEA cautions so-rated oils are not suitable for all engines. And not suitable for extended drain unless approved by the engine manufacturer.
