Not sure I'm following you. Did you look at the pic? The main building is steel trusses with purlins running, long-wise on the building. There's a single purlin under the overhang, running along the length of the building.

I would remove the purlin, and the siding attach a header to the posts and run the new rafters up to sit on the header and then reinstall the siding and finish the roof as you mentioned.
Wanted to stop by with another update on my pole barn project. We just hosted our first wedding this past weekend and it was a huge success. I built a 40'X90' pole barn, concrete floor and closed it in with T1-11 with wood panelling on the inside (painted white). The floors are acid-stained and I added a 40'X14' lean to, which houses restrooms and bride/groom suites. I still have lots to do with landscaping, along with additional concrete pads for sitting & food prep. The builder did a great job and I don't appear to have any leaks and we just went thru a bad storm with 70 mph winds. Here's a link to our gallery: Gallery | Ryan's Chapel

What are you doing for heating and cooling?
I haven't installed cooling yet but have 2 propane shop heaters. Only had to run 1 of those this past weekend and no more events scheduled until April. I'm intending to install a couple of multi-zone, mini-splits, probably 4 ton each by summer. I have the whole thing pretty well insulated. I've gotten the major stuff done but have a lot of tweaks, mostly trim work and sealing a few joints on the outside, remaining to do. I also need to pull some more circuits. All of my lighting is LED. The chandelier and string lights consume less than 200 watts, total.
