Good for you, enjoy it. Those other people are just envious.
Plus, it's a good bet that one of them will be the first to ask to borrow it.

Bigtiller - spot on. A whole lot of us have a whole lot of things that are only used infrequently. You know - being just dam handy springs to mind.

Sounds like you are going to put that tool to good use replacing all those faucets, etc. Your money, your decision. As to those that might think otherwise, I bet you could find things they spent money on that you would not have. But it is their money, their decision. To each their own.

I am not a plumber and I just cant fathom a crimping tool for a homeowner that would cost $2000. But if you think you need one of that caliber and can afford it, then by all means go for it.

My wife soon forgot about chastising me for buying a one time use tool( or any tool for that matter) after she found out it did no good to complain. If I need something, even if it is a one time use, then I buy it. I dont buy contractor quality tools for one time use though.

I also dont agree with the thought of saving something for my kids. They all make a good living so they dont need my money. I do what I want with mine, after all, I worked and saved for over 40 years for what I have. If there is anything left when I die, then everyone can fight over it (or not) but I dont consider myself saving for my children. Wife and I do whatever we want but both of us are mainly happy to just stay home most of the time.

Growing up my parents were very frugal and we worked very hard as a result. When I started my own construction business I vowed to get the correct tools to do the job. It makes everything go faster and easier. I have several styles of crimpers for pex and assorted tools for soldering copper. I have spent countless dollars on tools. Some people say I have a love for tools. This is probably true. I have bought tools just because I like them or they are better than what I currently use. I can admit it I have an obsession with tools. I don’t buy low quality tools either. I quit that a long time ago. If you use tools especially for a living low quality tools will let you down.

This spills over into whatever I do. I got into RC. Guess who went out and bought a nice high end set of tools dedicated just to the RC stuff. I decided to make some manuals with some comb binding. Guess what? Yep, bought all the tools required. I am a tool junkie. Big or small I want to buy them all. I figure I worked hard and made the money I can buy what I want with it.

I am in the spend it the way you want too club. I bet those telling you that your stupid have something they spend money on that I or you would find unnecessary.

Everyone has different vices and different things we prioritize. For my wife it’s clothes for our children. She buys and sells clothes like crazy but that’s her thing. They have plenty of clothes but she sells and buys different clothes all the time so they can have new things. She is pretty good at it. Some would call it a waste as they have plenty of what they need.

Suffice to say that we all have our vices. Some people’s just actually help them accomplish a goal others just provide enjoyment. Some do both.

Funny thing....
Years ago, I couldn't figure out why people would spend so much money on golfing....
Until I mulled it over one day while sitting in my $20,000 bass boat.

I spent more on my last bicycle than I did on my first motorcycle. Like my dad use to say: "Look at that fool doing all that pedaling just to give his *ss a ride." Does it make sense? Probably not, I'll have to think about it on my next ride.

Buying a $2000 tool for crimping pipe is not something I would do. I hate plumbing but I know how to solder and it is a cheap way to get the job done. So for me, it would not be a good investment. But if you enjoy doing the work but cannot solder, go for it! And if you just prefer to crimp, go for it! It's your money.

I think a $50k bass boat is idiotic, but guys buying them will think my toys are just a stupid.

It sounds like many think this is a Pex ring tool. It's not. This is to install/compress full copper fittings that use an inner seal rather than soldering. These are slick, and definitely the choice of plumbers when repairing or installing copper. The speed of the install is incredible compared to soldering.

In this particular conversation I don't think we are talking about a tradesman tool as much as we are talking about something that is "wanted". :)
