If you're on WiFi you can also set it to "metered connection" and it won't update unless you tell it to.

I had one notebook with 10. Reformatted and put 7 on it. We have 3 computers running 7 and I recently put XP on 4th. I had some BMW diagnostic software that runs on XP.

I am running Windows 10 with the latest updates on both a Dell laptop 64 bit and a Dell desktop 64 bit without any problems at home both versions are home edition. I want to keep the latest security Windows 10 updates on my hardware so I update as soon as they come out.

I alow automatic updates but kept having a pop up this week that locked the screen and said I needed to klick "up date now"or windows 10 would cease working.
Didn't smell right so I called a geek. He said it wasn't legit and walked me through escape. Afterwards I went to windows and it said no up dates pending. I had the same thing a few weeks ago except the locked screen said Norton needed to be up dated,,,,,,,I don't have Norton so I skipped that one also. Never a dull moment around the net.

I started using uBlock Origin in Windows 10. It blocks a lot of stuff so be prepared. Plus I started using Quad9 for DNS which is 9.9.9.9. It is a system setup by IBM to keep people from hacking you through DNS. They try to stay up on the latest with DNS. I recommend using 9.9.9.9 for DNS on your router, machine etc.

Spoke too soon. Could have made coffee from the time my display screen picture came up and "sign in" box came up this morning. Worked good coming up a couple times yesterday.

Get my comics while eating my breakfast cereal on the iPad. Otherwise, comics take about an hour on this machine: e.g. about 15 minutes vs. an hour.

NOT!

I have had both my computers set to "metered connection" for over a year now to forestall the updates. It does delay them - I will get warning messages telling me it needs to download the latest updates. I ignore them. Then a week or so later when I hit the menu to shut the computer down...lo and behold, now my options are to install the downloaded update and restart or install the downloaded update and shut down.

Next time I buy a computer I think I'll go back to Apple. At least Apple updates seem to be painless. Every Windows 10 update seems to break something. The latest Windows 10 update keeps disabling the touchpad on my laptop and the fix, I am told, it that I need to update the touchpad driver. But when I try to do that, I'm told the latest driver is installed!

Microsoft is trying to move to subscription model and get money every year from everyone, not just for office products, but for Windows also. Many companies are already selling their products that way, more coming. Perpetual licenses moving to term licenses with time bombs to stop working when term is up.

The problem is, they don't charge less and people are not going to like paying each year for computer software.

Which only means trouble for those of us who live where internet connections suck. How am I supposed to download a multi-gigabyte file on a connection that is measured in kilobytes per second, not megabytes? I do a lot of photography stuff and had to go away from Adobe because Photoshop is now available only in the "cloud".

Far as I'm concerned what we need is a good EMP and get rid of all this electronic crap and get back to basics. You want to send a message, build a smoky fire and get a blanket and send smoke signals. Of course your Piezo ignited BIC won't work either so it's the stick and block of wood time to get that fire ignited.

You'll have to hoof it too because your ride won't start and it will be dark in your house with no electricity. Time to get out the oil lamps you have in the shelf (if you have any that is). If not, sit in the dark and contemplate. Hopefully, it's not cold out 'cause it will be cold inside as your furnace won't work either.

Life would be much simpler.
