Buying Advice First Tractor, Used Kubota BX25

   / First Tractor, Used Kubota BX25 #21
It is likely that most JD dealers do not like having used orange (2004 = Mary Kay pink?) tractors sitting on their lots.
They want to sell NEW JDs!

They actually had a newer model M5 on the lot as well but a bit big for my uses so I didn't inquire and this one believe it or not isn't quite as 'pink' as my Cab 9 is...

I actually thought being a JD dealer and probably taking it on trade and not giving the previous owner much, they were willing to let it go for not much as well. Their loss, my gain. Pre 4 large frame FWA Kubota's demand premium prices right now. I sucked that up instantly. Drove 400 miles to buy it but they actually delivered it no charge.

If you peruse a site like Tractor House, you'll soon see a Pre 4 M9 with a loader, FWA, hydraulic shuttle in fair condition is commanding at least 25-28K, if you can find one that isn't beat that is. I got 2 buckets, 70% rubber and 3 sets of remotes with flow control with this one. Had to do some minor stuff (to the tune of 2100 bucks at my dealer) getting it to 100% but I still did just fine. Now I have 2 identical units, one cab, one open station that share filters, oil and hydraulic fluid plus the rubber is the same size and I can even exchange loaders if I want to.

I'd much rather have a big tractor versus a little one. I never seemed to have quite enough 'go power' until I finally stepped up to the large framed M series. If I remember correctly this is my 10th and 11th Kubota. 85 pto horses seems to be enough now.:)

Thank you! All this advice has been very reassuring and has been greatly appreciated! I am going to talk to the seller as soon as possible, he still had a couple small things to do before he sales it. So I still have a little time before I have the chance to buy it as long as everything works out! Thanks again!

If it's your first tractor you need experience and experience from and experienced trainer is usually better than trying to see how it works experience. Especially from a person experienced with the actual machine your getting. Ask your seller if you can do the few chores he needs done with it while he guides you and teaches you. This may lock in the deal a bit quicker and a bit more secure and help the seller and help you. I had no experience or training with my first tractor, a BX2200 FEL MMM 16 years ago and sure could have used some tips and directions. The backhoe itself can use some good training in its usage and operation and the front bucket is also something a new user can use tips on. The more I think about it the more I think you should pay him to let you do the chores and teach you.:cool2:

Commonality of parts is a HUGE issue!

One aspect I don't believe first time buyers or even veteran buyers of used tractors (or mechanical implements) take into account and that is, no matter what you buy or where you buy it or how much a seller promotes it as being 'good to go'. Good to go is a very relative term.

9 out of 10 buys of used equipment will require some repairs of something. Very rare for a used piece of equipment to be turn key and that aspect increases with the age of the item. The older it is and the cheaper it gets, the more probable it becomes that equipment will need some sort of repair.

Anyone buying used needs to be aware of that. Take the blinders off and look at it for what it is, not what you think it is.

5030 makes a good point. Wise to budget something for repairs/maintenance on most used stuff. Some folks tend to let things slide if they know they are trading in soon.

At the minimum, oil and filter changes for engine and hydraulics. Cheap insurance

"18K Canadian back in the Fall of 2008" ....Plus that miserable 13%, commonly called HST..... for $2340 more?
No tax on private sales in the USA, and no tractor titles, or registration required either.

Holy smokes! I just checked on kubotausa.com and the list price for a new Bx23S is almost $28k Canadian! (The exchange rate is apparently $1.34 right now.)

Well everyone! Thanks for all the advice once again. I am now the new owner of the Kubota Bx25. Upon closer inspection, the tractor does need a little tlc, I found some loose bolts and the belt was loose which I took care of right away. Only had a few minutes on it and can't wait for the projects I am going to be able to complete in the future. I appreciate each person that chimed in on this discussion! I now just have to control my excitement!

Congrats! The best purchase I ever made was my BX25D for getting things done around my property. When I added a quick attach and forks that really opened up a lot. No more lifting heavy objects needing help. Now I can do most heavy moving of large objects myself!
