I have a Kubota MX 5000 with loader and backhoe. I have had a couple of hydraulic hose failures that I have been lucky enough to catch before losing more than a couple of gallons of fluid. My fear is that I will blow a hose where it is not obvious and empty my hydraulic system. My tractor's hydraulic fluid reservoir is the transmission casing. Losing fluid to my loader or backhoe would be an inconvenience but emptying out my transmission casing could cause severe damage (I imagine) to my transmission. Is the design such that the hydraulic pump will lose it's suction before my transmission casing is emptied? Any information would be appreciated.

No, the pumps suck off the low point of the case so when it quits sucking fluid it’s pretty much empty.

The hydraulic pumps are much more sensitive to run without oil than a simple transmission like your tractor.

Absolutely not true.

HST transmissions are not at all tolerant of lack of oil and damage caused by such abuse is very expensive to repair.

Isn't the MX5000 a geared tractor?

If you have to ask the question you should not have made the first comment. MX5800s are hydrostatic drive.

Who mentioned MX5800? Re-read the thread. :)

I know the MX5000 is geared. I did research before my post.

I just asked to see if SDT was actually reading my post right, because I'm pretty sure he didn't.

Well, there seems to be a lot of that going around tonight. Sorry about that!

I would say, many, many machines have blown a hose and run out of oil without damage. BUT, it would be one more reason I would not want to run a tractor in unattended operation, like running a PTO generator.

Thanks guys for your help. My MX5000 is not a HST. I should have specified. From the feedback I gather that an unattended hydraulic leak will empty my transmission casing. I can only hope that some sort of unexpected response from my loader or backhoe will warn me before I do serious damage to my transmission gears. How much would a transmission low oil level light have cost Kubota?
