Food Shortage this Fall

/ Food Shortage this Fall #41
At the beginning of the virus panic people were buying freezers like crazy.

Have seen more people buying seeds than in previous years.

The chicks seem to be leaving TSC faster.

Like others I think once the reality of gardening and raising chickens sets in it will probably be their last time. Some things ya dont learn overnight.

I usually rotate out my laying hens every two years, although for the last couple of years I've had a fox vixen accelerating that.
This year I am going to wait until fall... I suspect that the novelty will wear off with a lot of people when they realize that they need to keep the water from freezing, and that hens still need feed even when they aren't laying well during our short winter days.

One of the first things they will learn is how many different predators live around them they never knew about...!

For anyone that has never eaten wild turkey they are not missing anything that is known for being great table fare...
IMO if you need to harvest small game to survive...rabbits and squirrels (marinated and fried) make much tastier meat dishes IMO...

I TOTALLY disagree!
If cooked properly.....wild turkey is MUCH better than domestic turkey, in my opinion.

Chickens are a PITA!
I grew up having to clean the hen house.

^^^^
I was just telling somebody today that people who grew up on farms don't understand the entertainment value for those of us who just raise a few animals because we want to. One of the biggest reasons that I raise hens is because my dog likes them.

You know that he's spoiled when a dog has his own pets. :D

There is a lot more to making meat palatable than just "properly cooking" it...(you can boil just about anything into mush)
I probably should have said that the value of the table fare of any wild game is directly related to how the meat is treated from the very second that the heart stops beating...

Wild turkeys are mostly no different that other game in the respect that what they eat determines how they taste (especially with black bears)... knowing how to care for then prepare the meat for cooking makes all the difference...

My point was for most small game (although in many places turkeys are considered "big game")...a turkey is not something that you can just skin and throw in a roasting pan and expect it to turn out like most non game hunters think of when they expect a turkey dinner...not to mention that if you only like white meat...you're out of luck...!

One thing I will be doing is getting a few more jars and lay in a stock of lids before all these new gardeners start to can.

Lets not forget those people who poison themselves because they THOUGHT they knew how to can........

Good luck with that. Our local big box stores are sold out of jars and lids already.

I just don't have 'the stuff' to deal with raising animals of any kind. I don't even have a pet any more. Got a few goldfish in an outdoor pond and feed the wild birds ... that's the extent of it for me.
