Same to you!

Heading out for a 2.5 mile with up and down walking in the Oakland hills... not bad for 86.

Last walk wasn't expecting to come across a bear in a tree... I need to get out more often and it is tick season... ;-(

(Don't know why the bear in tree picture loaded upside down?)

Before I forget... Victoria BC is one of the most beautiful places we have visited... and hope to return soon!

Looks like your mother is in great shape at 86.

She was still running marathons at age 75 and only eye drops for meds... it's the Alzheimer's that threw us a curve ball...

She is very aware no one comes to visit anymore but unaware when it comes to Covid-19.

Wow... the only marathon I did was a Walk-alot fund raiser a couple times when I was young!

Still holds some 50 mile age group titles for Ultra Runs but time moves on... Biggest disappointment is the 100 mile Western States Squaw Valley to Auburn... lots of snow that year and pulled at mile marker 66.

Mom took up running to kick a pack a day smoking habit... the more she wanted a smoke the more she ran... started running in her nursing shoes.

Darn impressive!

It's hard to watch someone who's body is fit and their mind is getting foggy. As we've talked about your mom and my father-in-law, it's pretty clear there's almost no correlation between the body's fitness level and the brain's fitness level. Little dude has started getting out of bed at 3:00am, getting dressed (he can't dress himself when mom's awake, but for some reason, when he's alone, he can dress himself), shaves, then walks around the house singing.

I saw him through a window a couple days ago when we took groceries over. He still knew my name. Can't name anyone else anymore. We took them some fried bluegill and coleslaw, too. He asked what it was. We said fish. He asked fish? We said it again. He just shook his head and shrugged his shoulders. He can't remember what fish is. We also took them half a chocolate cream pie. My mother-in-law reports she left the kitchen for a couple minutes and he ate the whole half a pie. He always had a sweet tooth.

Years ago my Dad died of complications from Alzheimer's. Last 18 months of his life he had no mental capacity and wore a diaper. I thought that was a horrible way to go.

Four or five years later an elderly good friend of mine died of Cancer. I visited him daily the last week of his life. Evening before he died I was sitting at his bedside. Mostly silent. Broken conversation between us. I was just spending time with him. Out of the blue he said "Richard I think I know what He!! is". I said "Voris I would love to hear your views". He said "It's when your body quits and your mind still works". We were silent for several minutes after that. It was a very profound statement that lives with me every day. Having recently experienced what I thought was pure He!! in my Dad's case.

Now, 25 years later, I agree with Voris. Losing one's body first is way worse. Voris lived every minute knowing he was dying and there was nothing he or anyone else could do about it. My Dad on the other hand wasn't aware of his condition.

Tastes have certainly changed... growing up Mom was never for sweets of any kind and only cake/desert would be birthday/Christmas/Easter. Now a carton of Ice Cream or muffins from work vanishes and if asked knows nothing about it.

Some of the previous comments have hit home... such as drapes and curtains... locking up everything or hiding things so they don't disappear...

Best thing ever is tracking key fobs for locating items... even put one on the hair brush!

More recent is wanting to get home before dark even when standing in her home of 51 years.

It is more of a job then I could have ever expected... all is good as long as I am within eyesight but taking out the garbage or going to the garden will get me locked out Everytime.

The little memory joggers don't work like they use to...

Richard... thank you for sharing your insight.... never thought of it this way as just about everyone I know was sharp to the end... even when bedridden.
