Use to be a fairly common site, to see a back hoe on the rear of a dozer... The dozer was terrible to run as a dozer with the hoe mounted though. BUT, I guess any day you can ride your hoe, is a good day... lol

Then with the explosion of the track hoe, they just went away!

I had 2 of those machines here when I was building back in the mid-90s: a Case 850, and a Case 350. Both had detachable backhoes, and FELs on them. I would guess the former was at least 12T, and the latter, maybe 3T. I would consider them "track-hoes", but that is not a very common or standard term.

Since those are rare now, I guess that would explain why some folks may call excavators "track-hoes".

here’s some of the stuff we’ve done over the years from hand falling 200’+ Doug Fir to commercial thinning.

That's a very tall doug fir. They seem to grow taller up in the PNW. And older, I hear. Maybe it is due the year-round moisture?

Around here, it seems only the redwoods get much over 150' tall. And the DFs seem to croak readily when they get to 150yo. The RWs get nearly half their water from the air (fog), so they tolerate the dry season better I suspect.

Ever notice that folks from the Eastern US "fell" a tree, and in the West "fall" a tree? Maybe the same in Canada?

We have some stuff pushing the 250’ mark for height I’m going to guess but from memory these are under 150yo they just grow good.

That and the east coast like big saws with short bars without full wraps I’ve never understood it myself from a safety stand point.

The Doug Firs do get big up here and Redwoods will grow if you plant them. I have both Coastal Redwood and Giant Sequoia growing. I certainly will never see them to any height to speak of, but they do well.

Lots of coastal redwoods have been transplanted all over the country, and even Europe. The biggest tree on my property is a RW that is 8' in diameter, and maybe 150-160' tall. Not sure on the height. All this area was completely logged out 100y ago. If you don't have the fog, plus lots of rain in a mild winter, a Sempervirens tree will never reach its true healthy height (300+ feet).
