Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

I taught Willard "sign language". If I'm on the tractor and want him to stay I simply hold up my hand palm toward him. He sits down. If I'm running the chainsaw and falling a tree I holler "HEY" to get his attention and then point whatever direction I want him to go and he'll go there and sit down, out of the way. I'm no dog trainer. But I communicate with him at his level.

As D2Cat said, I could leave Willard in the truck with the windows down and he'll be there when I get back. All that requires is saying "stay" when I get out.

You are a smart dog ain't ya Willard!!!!

Reminds me of a Dick Van Dyke Show episode:

We have a law here in Missouri, any cattle on your property can be rounded up and taken to the sale barn. You can call one of the cattle hauler truck operators to come and get them and take them in for sale. Even a rangy old cow is worth some money. They sell in the "canner and cutter" class of animal. They go into processed meat.

In NM cattle must have a brand before they can be transported.

I have an appointment to go see the neighbor Saturday. I will post here with how things turn out.

I'm expecting to hear that they will keep the dog on their property. Of course, it will take time to tell if that happens or not.

Be sure to show them pictures of what might be the end of their dog, if he keeps running.

I hope it works out.

Good luck. No matter how it works out in the long run, you will always know that you took the high road.

I really don't have any choice. I have had a dog companion almost my entire life. So shooting or harming someone else's dog companion would be nearly impossible for me.

And, I agreed to circle back and re-communicate if a problem persisted. Doing anything other than that would not be right. I think it will work out ... but the dog may not be happy if it is tied up for the next X years.
