JD Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuild Help?

Do you mean rods?

pistons are what goes into the hydraulic cylinders and gets pushed out and in by the hydraulic pressure, some people call them rods, but their function is as a piston..

Found my issue. One of the lift cylinders was leaking internally. Seals were cracked and pinched. Fixed my issue right away

Here is what I learned when I did mine and had the same problem:

In the seal kit there is a orange plastic piece...in the end of the cylinder there is a groove...Now put the plastic piece in the groove, make sure its flush all the around. Now you can do as Andy said...give it a good YANK!

What is happening is part #6 is expanding and catching in the groove stopping you from pulling out the rod. Drove me crazy also!

When you go to put the new seals on the piston, boil them in water for a while to soften them up. I then wrapped a piece of thin aluminum flashing around the piston and clamped it with a hose clamp while they cooled-but this was probably unnecessary.

Not sure if you are still receiving after all these years but a big THANK YOU for sharing this. One of the bucket cylinders on my 200CX had started to weep so, being big on preventive maintenance I ordered a replacement seal kit, Without your guidance (and chains; lifting slings, an immoveable object and a 4 Wheel drive) I would not have been able to extract the piston.
Then...wait for it.... the kit is correct according to the JD parts manual but my cylinder is a previous model
Had rebuild the cylinder with the old parts because who knows how long it will take for JD Australia to work out the problem with JD USA. Trap for new players!:confused2: getting the internal stop ring on the end plug back into the cylinder AND MAKING SURE that it is properly seated took three attempts. That's a lot of oil to clean up off the workshop floor.
