I'm impressed that the discussion has gone on this long and is still remaining civil. I figured a thread like this would have been closed in less than 50 post.

My biggest issue are the red-flag laws. They advertise them as being common sense, but they are not being used like that and they are clearly unConstitutional. I believe I've already heard of two stories were that have been used poorly. One was a police department using the red-flag law to further an investigation into a bad group. The other, I wish I had a link, was a school crossing guard. He was an older gentlemen that had his guns removed. He was given no receipt and he was unable to get his guns back. It appeared that he said something about the SRO being incompetent at the school he worked near. Well the SRO's girlfriend was a waitress and likely overheard this. She reported that the guy was going to shoot up the school. I don't like laws that allow people to do things with unkind motives to do damage to others without fear of punishment, nor laws that put the government's endless money against an innocent citizen who doesn't have the time or money to fight it. I'd love to find the article to hear if they guy has gotten his guns back.

Yep! It the old communist snitch strategies being put into place. You see it in the beginning of Stalin, Pol Pot, and other totalitarian regimes. Too much opportunity for a disgruntled neighbor, ex spouse, business deal gone bad, opposite political party, etc to turn in someone he/she doesn稚 like.
Then the accused has to mount a lengthy and expensive defense which may result in loss of personal protection for a long time.

It doesn稚 belong in a free society.
Guys, freedom aint free. It痴 not perfect, but the second best system to freedom is a big drop off in quality of life.

When I opened this discussion one thing I wanted to see was if the same people who had been supporting ‘shelter in place’ as a solution to CV would also support the ridiculous Virginia gun grabbing. Pretty much to a person that is the way it’s shaking out.

That implies that absolutely no one should be prevented from possessing a firearm for any reason.

That opens the doors for the mentally disturbed, drug addicts, alcoholics, people with violent criminal history, etc....

So those are all ok, correct?

Actually... Yes, I do think everyone should be allowed to OWN firearms just like knives, baseball bats, and hammers.

I also think we should have laws against killing people.

I do NOT understand how background checks prevent anything.
Whats to stop someone from passing the background check & then using the GUN to KILL you?
How many criminals could pass a background check before they committed their first crime?

MI has the standard background checks for buying from a FFL AND to get a PERMIT to buy ANY handgun.
Handguns then have to be REGISTERED.
To date, no crime other then carrying an unregistered gun has been solved or prevented by the registration.
MANY MANY people convicted for gun crimes passed background checks to buy their gun.

Why is it that states with the most restrictive gun laws still have some of the highest rates of gun crime?

My experience has been that pro-gun pro-2nd-Amendment people can have a decent debate and go left/right of that general position with healthy discussion. We're on the same general side. Most of us are extremely serious about gun safety (more than many in the anti-gun crowd could ever appreciate). I think it helps. Personally, I put gun safety above the 2nd amendment. It's just the way I was brought up -- if we were unsafe or did something stupid, mom/dad would take the guns away and their authority trumped the constitution in our household. So we all grew up with healthy respect for the privilege and responsibility.

Pretty much every failure I see in the system can be traced back to lapses in safety and common sense, and an inability to recognize/admit that. Understand the flaws in the system and how they feed into opposing sentiments about guns, and it goes a long ways. I don't agree with anti-gun folks, but I understand why they feel that way about 80-90% of the time. Maybe they grew up in a different environment, maybe they had a bad experience, maybe they saw others abuse gun rights. If you want to disregard or dismiss their opinions, then be prepared for it to happen the other way around too.

I run the managed hunting program for my property association, and I feel like we have done a good job dealing with a wide range of opinions about guns among property owners. We had a few reckless hunters that were kicked out, and they were harder to deal with than any of the anti-gun people, by far. My biggest rule is that we have to set a good example for hunting and firearms use. If someone had a concern, let's prove them wrong by example. It goes a long way towards keeping everyone comfortable with the hunting program.

And in your household did you mishandling a gun cause your neighbor to loose his right to own & shoot?
No? I didn't think so.
Did you ever get to use guns again?
Yes? Thought so.

Education is a bigger factor then most anything else. Gun safety SHOULD be taught in schools from 1st grade on.
I personally think much of the "Gun Safety" is going a little bit overboard but I grew up with a gun hanging on the wall & others in the hall closet .
I KNEW not to touch.
I KNEW guns would hurt/kill if you shot someone.
I KNEW dead people didn't come back.
I KNEW to check to see if a gun was loaded & how to do that.

I also knew that if a gun didn't have a lock on it, it wasn't going to hurt ANYONE unless someone pulled the trigger.

There are still many challenges to be concerned about regarding Second Amendment rights in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

>>>>>Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran and Lori Haas of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV). Virginia gun rights advocates may remember Haas as a vocal cheerleader for Attorney General Mark Herring's 2015 attempt to remove reciprocity for 25 states Right-to-Carry permits. Haas opposed the compromise legislation with then-Governor Terry McAuliffe that reversed Herring's maneuver by granting reciprocity to all state Right-to-Carry permits. Longtime gun rights supporters will know that CSGV is the handgun prohibition organization that until 1990 was known as the National Coalition to Ban Handguns.<<<<

No doubt this will be coming back up in the next legislative session.

Trolling as means to collect information to a skewed POV.

Virginia has not grabbed any guns. Your dog whistle, here is also, bad taste.

Ahh, that happens with a lot of other social issues too.
