JD 4110 front axle seals leaking-need help/advice

   / JD 4110 front axle seals leaking-need help/advice #11
Another update, sorry if anyone is getting sick of me talking to myself haha...

Called the dealer today and spoke with both the parts departments and one of the service techs at the same time on speaker. They confirmed that I would have to order the new case since that bushing is no longer made to fit the old spindle and case.

I went ahead and ordered it for the side I have the issue on and will be seeing how it goes and what it all ends up costing before deciding on doing the other side.

They said it should be in this upcoming Wednesday (it's Friday). I'll take some pictures as I go and update here when I get the parts and time to install. -tim

I was able to get out into the garage today to snap some pictures of what I was talking about with the bushing not fitting into the bottom of the case. Hopefully this will give some perspective to anyone able to help...

1st image is the bushing setting on the inverted bottom of the case to show how it doesn't fit
2nd is showing how loose the bushing is around the original spindle
3rd image is the bushing I bought to replace the missing one (JD part #LVU800629)
4th image is the spindle

Any help would be super appreciated. Haven't heard anything back from a few messages I've sent out, so might just tear the other side apart to compare. If I do, I will definitely update in case anyone else runs into this. Thanks! -tim

JD parts says when buying the bushing P/N LVU800629 ALSO order P/N LVA803306 which is the gearcase.
The part you are calling a spindle is a pinion, per JD parts. It's listed as LVU800546, then replaced by LVU802814

MY WAG (Wild ***** Guess) is the gearcase was failing, so JD replaced it with a gear case that has a replaceable bushing P/N LVU800629, and also had to replace the pinion with a different P/N, LVU802814

As loose as the bushing is on your pinion, I think you need the updated pinion too. P/N LVU802814.

How is the fit of your old gearcase and pinion? If OK, I would not replace the gearcase just to add a bushing. If your gearcase is worn, a machine shop could machine the ID, and press in a bushing (NOT P/N LVU800629, unless it fits the new P/N LVU802814 pinion, and you replace the pinion) I think a correct size bushing could be sourced.

Zebra, from all of the information I have gathered, I believe you are correct about there being a failure. However, my conclusion based on the JD DTAC posted and from what others have written about, it that it was the bushing that wore out and then led to seals, bearings, pinions, etc... wearing as well. The redesigned case has a deeper seat and now uses an (additional?) bearing I believe and no bushing.
I'll post a few pictures I found from a poster on another forum (BigJim55) that show the two side by side. His tractor was a 2520 I believe, but the parts list all cross references as I believe they share parts.
I saved the DTAC I found posted too, so I'll see if I can post that somehow.

I'm not sure if I can link a PDF here, but I took a screenshot of the DTAC where it explains the most. I can screenshot the entirety if anyone wants, just let me know.

OK, lot more information than the parts catalog gives. Now I see why the gearcase needs to be replace. But still does not answer why yours had no bushing,
Since this was the bushing the DTAC was addressing.

I think it goes back to the previous owner being in there. That's the only answer that possibly makes sense to me. The other side had the bushing when I went in to replace the seals, but was missing the large gasket on the case housing.
I'll keep everyone posted. I'm really interested to hear how the few who posted about successfully replacing the bushing did so, but that looks like its going to remain a mystery. I should have the parts this Wednesday so fingers crossed I didn't forget to order anything!

I got it buttoned up and took it for about a half hours worth of work yesterday afternoon. All seems well.
The gear case (kit) was $318 and included a new case with the pressed in bushing as well as the new pinion. The pinion alone when I had checked parts was around $160, so it made it a bit easier to swallow, especially since I'll hopefully never have to do this again. Few other miscellaneous parts, bearings, and seals (some duplicates that I didn't end up using, but didn't want to have to make yet another trip to the dealer) put the cost right around $390.

Hi, just joined the forum and this information has been very helpful. I'm having the same axle leak / slop issue on my 4115. Can you confirm exactly what John Deere part number you ordered that included the gear case as a kit? The dealer is telling me the pinion is separate, and it's listed at $390 by itself. Thanks.

@AFish66 I don't have the part numbers handy, but i did have a lengthy conversation on the phone with my parts manager trying to figure everything out this past spring. We had gone back and forth trying to figure out what I needed and it was more than a little bit of trial and error before they realized that I would, in fact, need the new cases.

I remember him being confused as to why the full assembly was cheaper than just the pinion and the case, but it was, so that is what we went with.

I honestly haven't been back there (lucky for my wallet) in a few months, so I have no idea if prices have gone up due to everything going on and shortages.
