My Ford 8N 11.2X28 rear tires are dry rotting and worn out. I can get FREE 13.2X28 tires but .... 2 of 3 have "hair" "beards" on the bead.
Can that beard be fixed with some kind of tire rubber goo?
Is it OK to use them like this since they have inner tubes?
Can run those on 11.2X28 rims or do I really need new rims? (11.2X28 are 10 Inch rims, these are for 12 inch rims.)

BTW, one looks like it does not have a beard and while faded looks OK - no dry rot. One obviously has dry rot. All have unused tread, sad to waste.

FREE is an exceptional bargain! Grab all 3. No issues with 4wd lead/lag. ... Shave off the hair. Store the "spare".

The bead is what holds the tire on the rim, I would not mount them......:2cents:

It's an 8N so he's going to be running tubes anyhow...

Because the bead is suspect and the rim is non-spec. I would inflate them only in a tire cage. And use them carefully. There is a danger of a tire blow-out. Sometimes cheap is expensive.

i would run them ... take a lighter or something and burn the hair off ...
i would also run tubes for safety
the rims are a little small [depending on the tire itself] but a bit higher in the middle is okay, compensate for that with a couple pounds less pressure

I have used two sets of tires with 'hair' on them in the past, they are still installed [with calcium chloride] and tubes, and are still going ...
This is NOT the wire beading coming loose, if that is broken, they are not safe to use...

Whatever. I have to say that if Miller Tire says they are unsafe, they are unsafe. He ought to know. Miller and Speck Tire are the two largest ag tire dealers and installers around here (yes, my farm is north of Wauseon, Ohio), though I use Speck out of Bowling Green.

You can do anything with anything but you and you alone assume the risk.

I was thinking of using vulcanized rubber to "clean them up" - I figure the inner tube does the real work as long as they don't spin on the rim. And if it blows - well, I can always order a tire from WalMart. (Yes, they sell them on line for store pickup.) BTW, one of the 3 tires does NOT have hair. :)

Sadly, they are in a semi-abandoned barn and I am having a hard time getting to speak with the owner to ask permission. Not worth getting busted for stealing $500 of old tires so the challenge now is getting permission. :)

I certainly don't have the expertise to assess like these folks.... but here's my lay person's take....

The person took them off for some reason?
Their free for some reason?

Seems to me the prior (current?) owner of the tires is simply trying to get rid of his trash..... I wouldn't want his trash to become my "treasure".

Good point. Given the speed the 8N runs in 2nd gear I figure give it a try and if it fails then buy a new one, if the hairless one is running OK.

These have brand new tread on them - they were never run on a tractor and still have "injection hairs" on the tread. They have been there a long time from the dirt I see inside.
The barn is full of old car/wagon tires - many used, some with tons of tread. These look like he got the tractor tires but never got to put them on anything. Maybe he had a tire fetish. All a moot point if I can't get hold of the property owners. I think they inherited the place, which is pending sale to a developer.

I have my own opinion of anyone that uses CACL but I won't post it here, I'll get spanked.

up here it gets pretty cold, minus 30-40 degrees for five months.. CaCl is pretty much standard here, plus weights ..

If you row crop or run hay like I do, a ruptured tire with CACL in it is death to anything growing where it leaks out and stays that way for years. I know. I'm experienced, why I don't use it. Cast weights only. It gets cold here too.

I would not run those at all.
First of all, never use fire to burn it off the bead.
Secondly, that cord is either the casing turn up plies, or a bead chaffer designed to the protect the bead. It that is indeed the turn up, then you will end up with sidewall separations no matter if you use a tube or not.
Thirdly, the sidewalls are already cracked out and dry rotted, so they aren't going to last no matter what.
Lastly, if you cut all that off, you are now effectively changing the diameter of the bead and it won't fit tightly on the bead and could blow off and injure someone very badly. Or, they will slip on the rim and cut the valve stems off the tubes and go flat.

Just because they have a lot of tread doesn't mean they are good tires.
Don't walk away from those, run.
