John Deere 870
Not sure how to label this question. I have a JD 870 and need to drag a 20ft container to a new place on my property. It says the container might weigh 3,900-4,800 lbs.

QUESTION: Can my tractor drag it? if so, better to drag from the rear going forward or from the front in reverse? Not sure the cleats on my bucket can handle that much weight nor would I want that much on the bucket.

Thanks!

Andrew

I have dragged a 40 foot container (with other machines) and had a 770 so I have a bit of feeling for this. I think the tractor is somewhat undersized. And I wasn't even thinking of the loader, just the 3ph.

Seems like a good way to damage a really nice tractor.

Very approximately a 4-WD tractor with all wheels in contact with the ground should drag 75% of its operating weight.

Many conditions detract from 75%. In your case dirt resistance under the container and in the form of a bow wave in front of the container might increase drag resistance by ~~33%.

Heavy work should be done from the rear of the tractor. Connect to the rear/center drawbar which attaches directly to the tractor frame, not the TPH.

PERHAPS you could jack up the front of the container then insert round fence posts under as rollers, one every three feet. (?)

Thanks so much! Yeah - I think it's more of an opportunity to do some damage to my machine. I can get a company out for $100 or so to move it. I like my tractor too much :)
Thanks!
