IF my pto tool is going to sit any length of time, I ALWAYS pull it apart... The U-joints are easier to grease when it's apart anyway.

I NEVER use grease on the shafts, WD40 (or the like) only, as it doesn't attract dust or get gummy or harden like grease. I have NO problem with WD40 drying out, I mean dry and no dirt is better than the dirt paste, grease can make...

This! I do the same except I use silicone lube as it doesn't rust as bad as WD-40.

I never have any more than a little surface rust, and that's no big deal at all.

I've never seen any pitting or anything like that.

Totally agree Bruce! I found your idea to be one of my secrets to success. Don't try to do it all at once!

The other secret is sliding the shaft back and forth - albeit slowly - to make sure it is free and ready to slide. I will push it in then pull it out, repeat 3 times, not big distances but it seems to ease the flow of grease. Once I get the shaft sliding, then I am ready to align with the splines.. slide on the splines, push to stop, push in the button, shove it in the rest of the way.

I was a newbie 2 years ago. Now I am a slightly broken in newbie... still learning. :D

To grease the sliding part of the shaft, how do you get past the covers? I guess I need to break out the manual and study that some and take those apart so I can clean and lube the shaft. Now that the hog is 2+ years old and has done a bunch of hogging and mowing, I think I need to take it apart, clean and lube. I did grease the u-joints and read on this forum about greasing the shaft but when I was on the farm last week, could not see an easy way to do it. I'm sure it will be obvious once I understand!

When the implement isn't hooked up to the tractor, the PTO shaft slides apart. That's the best time to lubricate it, and a little grease goes a long ways. As mentioned previously I've found that 00 gear lube does a good job.

Interesting. I never thought of doing that since my driveshafts have grease fittings on them from the manufacturer, nothing in manual about using WD40 in a John Deere, New Holland, Pottinger, Claas or Krone manuals on drive shafts...
Been using grease on them close to 40 years now, with no issues. Shielding keeps them pretty free of dirt & dust.
Maybe without shielding I could see using WD, but it wouldnt last a day of farming in my operation.

+1 on that. All mine have grease fittings and access cutouts in the shielding too. Don't believe WD40 would provide the boundary lubrication grease does and a good quality non clay based (cheap) grease won't dry out, ever.

Don't know about you but farming and grease and greasy hands go together. Why I carry a pair of 'hookup gloves' in every tractor's tool box.

Well, you got me with those comments, dad started "this" farm in 1954 and he used grease, I/we quit using grease in the early 70's, so what do I know??

NO problems saying "good by" to grease here...

I think its a misunderstanding on what the pto soulition does for some of us. Im 83 and when i have to hook up anything using the pto on my new style pto on the tractor XG3135 LS the blades on the bush hog or finish mower have to be rotated for me to line up the pto shaft to install and that requires my 82 yr old wife to rotate what ever i am hooking up and believe me when i say she does not like doing that . Thats right guys the LS pto shaft cant be rotated , now I have tried putting a cheater bar i the shaft to rotate but that didnt work very well, i tried a lot of other ways but found out that it worked better to hook up the cutter and lift as high as i could and get someone to rotate the blades to hook up. The PTO Solution solved all of that for me.
I have hooked 100 of times with the style pto that you can rotate the pto shaft with no problem but this is a different deal and thanks to Tony's Tractor post the problem is no solved and its worth every penny to me to not have to deal with a angry Wife.

Getting the covers off was the key. Went out to the manufacture's web site - they had a video. Got everything apart a lubed except for one zerk. The way it is assembled, there was no means to get the lube tip on the zerk. We're gonna take that apart and so put in a right angle or 45degree zerk so we can get to it.

Thanks to all here on TBN for the support for newbies. This is our first stop when looking for answers.

I'm fairly new to tractors and what I have found to help me attach my rotary cutter shaft to the PTO is to make the implements shaft is almost horizontal with the PTO shaft.

And greasing both ends.
