New garage time!

Will plywood squeak on metal joists? I've never encountered metal joists before and wonder if it's even an issue.

The only thing that I can think of that would stop squeaking, if it happens, would be the tape used on metal roofs. I'm drawing a blank on what it's called.

Butyl?

We built around '89 and over the years the floors have developed quite a few squeaks. We used T&G plywood and it was all glued and screwed. I've read a lot about fixing the squeaks and a couple sources claimed squeaking is sometimes caused by the joints in the plywood - where they run perpendicular to the joists moving slightly. At least one said the cure is to run a saw on the joint to create clearance between the sheets.

I'm almost looking forward to replacing the floor coverings just to make it stop.

Can you get underneath it? Just toe screw through the joists back up into the floor ply.

I used a polyurethane construction adhesive in my work truck (Sprinter) to attached plywood to the sides which were metal and it has held up very well. Been at least 8 years.

I can get under the first floor, but not the second. There's unfaced insulation between the first floor joists that I'd rather not mess with.

I would talk with the metal joist guys for their recommendation. Maybe there is a compressible tape that can be laid down on the top flanges?

You talk like squeaky floors are a bad thing. I live in an old house. I think the squeaky floors are just part of it's character. Probably because it's easier to enjoy the floors squeaking rather than fixing it.

There's probably a glue that will bond to both wood and metal.
I have a few squeaks in the hardwood floors here and there. Someday I may look into fixing them, but they are really not that bothersome. The last house I had (1949 build) had so many squeaks you could tell what room someone was in just by listening to the squeaks. Just part of life.

I hate squeaks... at a minimum I would put a bead of construction adhesive along all the top flanges but the issue is that metal and wood expand at different rates, thus my thought of a foam tape of some sort might be the ticket.

I think the roofing butyl tape would fit that.
