I don't want to own and maintain 2 homes, Once we pack up and move..its done..I really do not like the North East at all. So I really can't see any reason we would want to come back.

It's getting very hard to find a great place anymore that others haven't already found. I guess that is one of the downfalls of a Utopia. South Carolina used to be one of those, but we left after the population went up four fold after 25 years. North Georgia used to be that way as well, but... Eastern TN, southern Kentucky, the northern border counties of NC, and SW Virginia are still great candidates. If you want low taxes go very rural.

Ohhh...my aching head...We. Pay about 20k a year in property taxes alone on a 3500 sf house on our land. And another few thousand on excise taxes for the cars..and a couple thousand for registration and vehicle inspection every year. ..what I find hard to understand is th cost difference in housing..a 2x4 costs the same here as it does in Fla or Mississippi... I can't imagine the labor is that much different. In very rough numbers, new construction built to code (. No frills ) runs about 130.00 sf at cost to the builder up here. So a 2 k sf home will cost roughly 260k to build..then add the land.. and anything else like a garage etc.

Labor can be much different. According to salary.com the average Carpenter salary in Tupelo, MS is $47,494 as of June 28, 2020. The average Carpenter salary in Boston, MA is $63,545 as of June 28, 2020.
Remember - all the labor must pay local prices - for fuel, food and real estate.

Edit - Just got excited the other day because my wife brought in more maple syrup from Vermont (from the farm she use to work part time as a kid growning up). If you've never tried real maple syrup on ice cream or pancakes, you really have no clue what you're missing).

Or try fresh made syrup on fresh snow.

I don't think I have ever met anyone who felt that way.

If you like rocky ocean beaches its hard to top the Maine coastline. But for me...its not that appealing. We typically ride up the coast 1 or 2 times a year on the bike.

If you like rocky ocean beaches its hard to top the Maine coastline. But for me...its not that appealing. We typically ride up the coast 1 or 2 times a year on the bike.

I don't like rocky beaches (I live on the VERY sandy Cape), but the Maine coastline is fantastically beautiful.
I sold my place in Nova Scotia 18 months ago, and that was quite similar to Maine.

Wow! My wife and I are looking to move to a cheaper county here in Michigan because our taxes are creeping up near $4k (we're in a rather developed county). Cannot imagine paying upwards of $20k.
