Hey Moss, ya still there?

Yeah, that initial assessment was based on the image of the radar. I contacted my father-in-law, who loves extreme weather events, and asked how bad it was. His comment was, "total bust."

My thought was, "well, shouldn't that be a good thing?"

Yeah, that's a normal reaction. However, we wanted to watch the 6:30 national news, and the local stations butted in panicking WIND WIND WIND!!!

For 30 minutes they were running around like chickens and there was nothing in South Bend. Nothing!

The problem is, our local station cover too much area. Probably 10-12 counties. Just too big of an area. So while it's sunny here, it can be armageddon 30 miles away and they have to cover it.

Iowa got hammered. The power went out Monday morning and it is still out. The highway north out of town is still blocked off from downed trees. The entire town [2500 population]and area around has trees so many trees and power poles down it will take several weeks to get back to some kind of normal. This is the second time in my 67 years that we have been out of power for more than half a day.

I have 2 large black walnut trees on the ground and 4 more that need to be removed. The tops of 3 maples and about a dozen or so spruce trees are on the ground.

The house is okay but the tin shed has some slight roof damage.

I just happened to look at my Davis Vantage Vew and seen the wind speed was 71.

I hope I never see another derecho again. pronounced (duh-RAY-cho)

That's in Virginia. Could be others I guess.

I've been to Pulaski Virginia. The first whiteout I've ever driven in was in Pulaski NY. Just surprised to see Pulaski on the Michigan map.

For some reason reminds me that there are more than two Transylvania's in the US.

I thought I was safe from hurricanes, but this low grade hurricane came with no warning other than a severe thunderstorm warning.

Over 1/3 of Iowa's corn/soybeans looked like this Monday. The beans are beginning to stand up and look better but the leaves are in bad shape.

It's not just the fields though ....

The storm, known as a derecho, slammed the Midwest with straight line winds of up to 100 miles per hour on Monday, gaining strength as it plowed through Iowa farm fields, flattening corn and bursting grain bins still filled with tens of millions of bushels of last year痴 harvest.

Before the storm hit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture had been expecting a record national corn crop this year of 15.3 billion bushels harvested from about 84 million acres. Iowa was to provide about 18% of that production. Iowa痴 crop was valued at about $9.81 billion in 2019.

The Iowa Corn Growers Association said it is too soon to accurately describe how much of this year痴 crop was lost. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said Tuesday that tens of millions of bushels of grain stored at farm cooperatives and privately on farms were damaged or destroyed.
