I am totally amazed that this scam pays their bills.
NOBODY I know answers those calls and when they do accidentally, they immediately hang up. All it is is a nuisance. And some people toy with them and keep them on the phone just to waste their time and p1zh them off. It has to be a ratio of 1 in 10000 that they even talk to a prospect.
Even on our local internet advertiser, (Craigslist type ), people state right in the add they won't answer because of robo-calls, so leave a message and will call back.
So how is this nonsense lucrative??? :confused3:

Unfortunately, the one in a thousand "scam susceptible" person is their payday. I am convinced that the rampant Craigslist $1000 tractor ads exist solely to collect scam susceptible contact information for future use.
I have also had one of our numbers spoofed. Several of the people called my wife back and were less than polite even after spoofing numbers was explained to them. I filter all calls that come from the same area code and exchange as mine, and let any other calls not in my contact list go to voicemail.

the phone system was working on a way to stop forged calls, this was like 2 years ago, maybe they get too much money to stop it!.. I found out why this is allowed. at the end of the page, it's explained!. Caller ID spoofing - Wikipedia

The majority of scams only work because people are inherently greedy. For example, most people that "press 1" to speak to someone about extending their car warranty only do so because their transmission is already slipping and this might be a chance to get it fixed under warranty.
Speaking of scams, did those people who paid to get on the do not call list get refunds when the service no longer worked?
I'm not 100% convinced our phone companies want to solve spam.scam and robo calls since they generate revenue by using phone services.

I haven't set up my voicemail in years. No point. With today's "smart" phones, voicemail is going the way of the telegraph.

Please explain why voicemail is going away. Even assuming you're one of those who takes their cellphone with them in the shower, bathroom and everywhere else, sometimes you're busy when it rings, or are where there's no coverage (common in rural areas). I for one would like to know if someone with an unfamiliar # was legit.

I prefer a landline, and having voicemail/answering machine is very handy.

3 times last year my own number came up on caller ID.

Yeah, I've had that a couple times too.

We tend to get a lot of calls where the caller ID is just some gibberish #, often starting with a V and a bunch of random digits. Like most of these, they never leave a message.

I wonder if having voicemail/answering machine pick up also marks you as a target.

Doesn't seem to be much of a priority with them that's for sure, and what blocking is available seems only to be for cellphones. I can't imagine a secure caller ID system would be that hard to create, though making one that's compatible with existing phones may be more difficult.

Before we got our new "long dormant" land line number, we had blocked over 90 political or scam calls. We were getting the spoofed "IRS" and "Social Security" calls almost daily. Now the phone is quite.

I called a dealer in another city, asking about a vehicle in their ad. They called back some time later and the caller ID showed their city name, not the business name. We have gotten many calls with a city name that were spam.

We normally ignore calls from names or numbers we do not recognize, like many folks here. If the call is important, the caller will leave a message.

When we moved here 15-odd years ago, we got assigned a phone # that had previously belonged to someone who was a major deadbeat. I don't know how long the # had been out of service between them and us, but we were just inundated with calls from collection agencies, etc. almost from day one.
After a couple months of this, we called the phone company and got the longest-dormant number they had in our exchange.

Maybe it’s like Twilight Zone. Be funny if you answered and “YOU” were on the other end.

We used to get these telemarketer calls all the time, now we don't. I would mess with them, act interested, "buy" whatever they were selling (of course, 16 digit fake credit card #)... I'd waste 20 minutes of their time, "let me get my wallet, now glasses", etc. Then wife would grab the phone "I'm nurse Ratchet, this is a mental facility and Bob is a patient". We've had them scream and curse...or I'd mess with them saying "please call back!".
A few their number would be on caller id (usually a social security scam or "Apple Support"). They want you to call them. So when a scammer would call home # I would call another scammer on cell. Put phones together and you'd have two Indians trying to scam each other!
Now we've been black listed, apparently we're on their do not call list.
