Nyla nuts

That bolt and nyloc nut is just to keep the pin from rotating ,
the nyloc is just to keep the bolt from falling out.
No reason for it to be any tighter it is not in a location requiring any specified torque on the bolt.

I agree. That bolt is being used as a pin, and the nyloc is serving the same purpose as a cotter pin would. No reason to tighten it.

So we solved a mystery and most of us learned a bit more about Nylock nuts. Not bad....

Agreed. If you had posted this photo earlier your mystery would have been solved.

As mentioned a cotter pinned bolt is also used or a spring roll pin.

Thx

That痴 kinda what I thought when I posted the question.

Which brings me back to the original question.

I assume Kubota speced implement attachment hardware and fasteners. I also assume the Kubota engineers had a good reason to spec bolts and nylenuts but.........why?

Again, I don稚 care and I知 not being critical, I知 simply curious why not a simple hardened pin with a clip? That would be cheaper, faster and I wouldn稚 be looking for the nylanut that fell off.

Not important, don稚 care, Just curious!

I'm guessing the one that is missing was never there to start with. As for the "why", go to McMaster and it looks like the price of pkgs of nylocks & bolts is surprisingly less than an equal number of any kind of pins with a drilled shaft and a clip.
Engineering wise, I'd think a nylock is more secure than any kind of clip.

I'm with you on the confusing part. Most Kubotas come with separate manuals for the tractor, BH, and Loader where a simple line of explanation - or even a "looseness spec" in some chart a nice gesture. All in all, there seems to be a lot that the manufacturers could learn from TBN if they only would.

Finally got some seat time in and thought about this thread. Found at least 6 threaded pins with Nyloc nuts on the FEL. All were attached and with a fair amount of gap. At least one looks like there is no thread protrusion. Will have to inspect them all next time out, and tighten as necessary. If I do have to tighten them, I will put on some blue loctite.

My guess is the one you had that fell off was never tightened into the nylon in the first place. Why didn't they use another method to secure the pin? Because bolts and nylon lock nuts are a great way of securing that pin (if done properly). I would prefer this method over roll pins, castle nuts with cotter pins, double nutting, locktite, smashing threads, lynch pins, or any method I could think of that would be used an alternative.

Not me! And I am saying this while my business is centered around plastic aerospace fasteners.

Nylocs are a sexy locking fastener and I use them a lot. But they are not as capable in high vibration, heat, or chemical environments. And a combination of environments makes these poor. That said... good enough for your tractor... absolutely!

I will also add that you should not add loctite to nyloc nuts! Loctite melts nylon...

Now that is interesting. I realize Locktite should be used sparingly but good to know for when working around plastic assemblies.
