Nyla nuts

When using self locking nuts and the intent is NOT to tighten then then it is important there is adequate bolt thread length in order to engage the nylon inserts of the nut without tightening the assembly.

Plus one. The nut has to have threads showing to the top surface (flush with the head or slightly above the head to work properly. Nylocks or shakeproof nuts work fine when installed correctly.

Use them all the time, never an issue here.

Certainly not deliberate but my NYLOCKS are at eye level. LOL.

Before the nylocks, the common method was "staking the threads". After the nut was tightened, you would take a chisel and score the threads. Very effective.

I sometimes use a jam or double nut. A nut on a nut. It can also help cover sharp exposed bolt ends that skin the shins. :)

Developed and first widely used by the airplane industry. Many old timers still call them airplane nuts. Here's a side note on reuse.

Dont believe I've ever seen "running torque" for Nylocks..... I would guess it is the required torque to turn nut in it's free state (no bearing down on hard surface)....

I'll add in that you should NOT install a nylock nut with an impact gun of any sort (unless for final tightening), people do it at work and it drives me nuts... Nylon is a thermoplastic, what does plastic do when heated? melts, what does running a fastener in fast create? Friction... Anywho, I'm all for impacts, I've installed thousands of screws with impact guns in the last couple months and am trying to train myself to use the cordless impacts more for projects but habits are habits...

Just a note, at work what they do is use the impacts for T bolt type hose clamps that have 1/4-28 threads and nylock nuts, after using the impact once the nylon is useless, after loosened a little you can use them like normal nuts.
