well, in 2010 i was going to purchase a new diesel truck, but just could not stomach the cost. instead i paid about 14k for a 2004 diesel f350 with about 35,000 miles on it. had a sticker in glove box that read 58,000. i took the money i saved and added some more and bought a rental house for 130,000. rented that house out at $900 per month continually until last december. sold that house for 224,000. all profit as i had no loan. so on top of all the rent and the $94k profit on the house, i still have a diesel truck with 98,000 miles on ot thats worth about 15K.

i think this was a far wiser use of my money.

Can't argue with that!

OK - lets see the direct opposite. My father was a biologist and worked for the WA Dept of Fish & Game. For whatever reason - he was provided a pickup truck to use for business.

I remember the day he got this brand new pickup. 1948 Chevy one ton. Bright Forrest green with big stickers on each door. He and I went out for a ride.

I had previously spent quite a bit of time working with a farmer and his large farm wagon. The farm wagon had a FAR SUPERIOR ride compared to this new pickup.

The pickup had no cabin heater. It had no air conditioning. It had no radio. It had no automatic transmission. It had no power steering.

I think it had I-beams in place of rear springs.

The ONE thing it did have. Almost unlimited load carrying capacity.

My father hated that pickup. He always said it gave him a case of raging hemorrhoids.

He kept it for two years and then gave it back to the Game Dept. He had had enough.........

Well it seems the universe has weighed in on my proposal. I will be driving a beater truck and probably purchasing a piece of property instead of a truck.

My boomerang truck has come back to me again. I have sold or given this truck away 3 times and somehow it always finds its way back to my driveway. This last time I had sold it to my sister & BIL a couple of years ago (basically gave it away). It broke down on her, not for the first time, and she decided she needs something more reliable. It needs a new alternator, battery, and power steering pump, and that costs more than they paid me for it, so she just gave it to me.

It's a '93 Silverado and this will be my 4th time getting the title changed over to my name. There really should be double jeopardy on the taxes. If not double, then at least triple or quadruple.

Locally there’s no tax on a gifted vehicle. Is there no such thing there? That actually looks like a pretty clean truck.

There is in my state... you have to put a value on it if you change title and license it... even if given to you free. The DMV may even question the value if it sounds too good to be true.

I’ve done it before. They have a form you have to take to the person that claims to have given it to you to signs

Take the truck to a trim shop and have them replace the dirty carpet with new vinyl and new backing. A good trim shop can work wonders on an interior.

Are you talking about a Bill of Sale? We need to have one filled out by the seller. The DMV will take a hand written note but if you put free or a suspiciously low value, you are at the mercy of the clerk to accept the Bill of Sale. So, people will state, sold as scrap, doesn't run, etc. Even then they will put some kind of value on it.

I was getting a new license plate a few weeks ago and the guy in front of me was complaining as he was given a motorcycle and was transferring title. The clerk asked what the value was and he said it was given to him free for parts salvage. The clerk said what are the parts worth? The guy was pissed but they came to an agreement of $50 and he got title.

They have a form at the court house. I guess it’s probably technically a bill of sale. His sister legitimately did give him the truck so there shouldn’t be any tax. Not that there should be tax on user vehicles to begin with.

I agree with you. WA state is probably more tax happy than TN. Sales tax on value not price when it comes to vehicles. Some go to Oregon to purchase big ticket items because there is no sales tax. Doesn't work for vehicles... you can't license them without paying the tax.
