About a year after we got married we got a Cairn terrier. The next year we got a kitten. I raised the kitten like a dog. Walked him on a leash, too. He'd sit. Stay. Roll over. Speak. All the good stuff. When we'd go to the Vet's office, I'd walk him and the Cairn in on leashes. All the dogs in the waiting room would be barking and jumping at him and he'd just hop up on a chair and look around trying to figure out what they were barking at.

There was a picture going around the internet a few years back of a cat walking through a room of German Sheperds, with a caption indicating how brave the feline was. In truth the pic came from a dog training book called "The Monks of New Skete"... a group of monks who raise GSDs for therapy and law enforcement work. They also have training books and videos. That cat was in absolutely no danger.

As a child we had a chihuahua that loved to go into the neighbors field and latch onto his cows tails and go for a ride.

When I was older dad got me a husky who grew to over 100 lbs. When I would take him to the vet I would always go through the drive thru and get him a cheeseburger.
Dad took him to the vet one time and came back fussing that the stupid dog went crazy at the bank drive thru.

Same husky loved cats until a deranged stray split his nose one day. From that day on he killed every cat he saw and buried them in the garden with their tails sticking out of the ground.

We had a lab that would clear off the coffee table wagging is tail and usually spilling drinks or smashing glass.
So one day I walked him around the table and manually demonstrated a one sided tail wag.
Dang it all he understood and from that day on no more spills or broken glass.

Later on we had an Airdale, super smart but energy plus.
My toddler learned to walk by holding onto the dogs ears, when my son would tilt backwards about to fall the dog would pull him forwards, Must have been painful!

Same Airdale wanted to go out but I said "Wait and NO"
Dang dog reached up grasped the door knob with his jaw, opened the door turned with a WOOF and took off.

Another time the Airdale leash was tangled around a small pine I had planted by the window.
He barked for me to come and untangle him but I was busy so I ignored him.
A short time later he paraded back and forth in front of that window proudly holding the small pine in his mouth.
I think he was giving me a message.
He had chewed himself free!

For sure some smart dogs out there!

As a kid, my best friend had an Irish Setter/Afghan Hound mix. Dog had super long ears. We used to fold it's ears over it's eyes and tuck them in. Dog would just sit there blindfolded for 10 minutes. It was a sweet dog, but dumb as a box of rocks, coupled with them never training it. I can't recall how many storm doors it destroyed by going through them.

One of my nephews and his wife have 2 Border Collies, the younger will wake my nephew up in the morning when she wants to go out by pawing his hand. They both go back to bed and a little later the older dog will go to his wife's side of the bed and fart to let her know it needs to go out. If either one of them is out of town over night then both will go out at the same time. My nephew is a rancher with several hundred cows and both dogs are with him constantly during the day and he says they are the best helpers he has ever had.

As a teen that always wanted to sleep my mother used to send the dog to wake me up.
Let me tell U that a cold dog's nose on your bare feet does the trick.
Dog would poke his face under the blankets to find the foot.

Then we had a cat that let U know it was his breakfast time.
It would jump onto the bed and land on you bladder and do a dance.
You had no choice but to get up.
Actually were it not for the full bladder it was a rather nice massage.

Neighbors dog used to come over to my uncles house, only when he saw my parents car, break into the basement and lift the slider latch to come up to the second floor and wake me. That was an amazing dog. First time scared the c*** out of me since he was quite large and completely unexpected. I don't think he liked the neighbors kids too much, he would always come over my uncle's place and hang around for days.

Had a cat that like to play with the kids toys when he was very little. The cat would open doors and look inside, spin the wheels etc. Have video of it. He also played fetch better than my dog and acted a lot like a dog, except when trying to give him pills or pack up to the vet. Still think I have scars from that.

Another cat we had would love to jump on my shoulder and hang out there, nice neck warmer. Always thought this was a neat trick until I saw a guy riding his bicycle around with the cat always riding on his shoulders. Would see him weekly for a while.

We had a part border collie when I was young. It was a good dog, but if there were more than 2-3 kids trying to play in the yard, the crazy thing thought we were sheep or something and run up and start nipping our feet and trying to force us into a small group. We'd have to yell MOM!!! COME GET THE DOG!!!

When that dog got old and was in the last years of her life, my wife and I adopted her from my father and our youngest child used her for a pillow while laying on the floor for a couple years. Very sweet gentle dog except for that herding instinct.

I used to get tired just watching my border collie run from one end of the field to the other.

She would crouch and herd the pallets of turf sitting in the field when I finished harvesting orders. Ran around like crazy as I forklifted them onto the truck.

Grandkids said "make me!!" When my wife went in and told them it was time to get up.

I walked back, opened up the door and told Gypsy "Go get your boys!!!"
