I've learned to let go of the person behind me and concentrate on the situation in front of me. I won't speed up for them. I won't tap my brake lights. If they hit me, it's their fault, their choice.

I get an arcane bit of enjoyment out of a tailgator when they are right on me and I jam on the brakes. Like to watch their eyes get real big as the peal off towards the ditch so they don't hit me.

.................Your honor, I had to apply my brakes very hard to avoid the dog that ran in front of me. I didn't realize Mr. Doe was that close to me and could not keep from hitting me................

Something about 'assured clear distance' that attorneys love.

yep. and the guy that hits you has no insurance, no assets, and maybe no driver's license and you're out your deductible at a minimum and maybe permanent neck injury.

I've been in an incident where the other person had nothing to go after. There was nothing I could do to get my money back. No assets. No job to garnish wages. Nothing. I ate it.

Not the grandpa in me, I stop on a yellow unless I am already in the intersection.

NOT safe. Can't believe you haven't been rear ended yet?

Nope, never have. Yellow means stop to me unless I am sure to make it thru before it turns red. If in doubt, stop.

Never been in an accident in my life.

...is a totally different statement than...

I have seen several near-crashes because of people coming to an unexpected stop at a yellow light that they and the next 6 cars could have made through before it turned red. You initially seemed to be self identifying as one of these people.

Pretty sure it's illegal to use the center turn lane as a merge lane.
Around here, we often use the center turn lane that services both directions as a merge lane. That can be pretty much be your only option certain times of the day unless you want to back up a bunch of folk that think you are an idiot. On legality... no clue.

I think you took my first post too literally. I don’t speed up like many do to make it through. I err on the side of caution and have never had an accident in decades of driving.
