If a payment is being made, finance charges are being applied. No lender does it free. :)

Yep. They are making it up somewhere. Usually 0% or cash discount for a reason.

A tip I picked up years ago (Consumer Reports magazine?) when buying a car that can also apply to other large purchases including tractors. Treat the purchase price, financing, and any trade-in as separate transactions. Do not mention a trade-in or financing until you have agreed on a price. I have ticked off a couple of salesmen doing this :).

While cash is nice, from a consumer perspective when 0% or low % financing is available for many people there are some other considerations to be made before forking over a sizable lump sum.

To get at that cash many folks are liquidating investments which have tax implications and there is an opportunity cost as well. If that lump of cash is invested making say 5-8% and you can borrow at 0%, some folks may desire keeping that money working for them and making that 5-8% vs. literally investing it in an asset almost guaranteed to lose value (ie. the tractor).

I used to have clients way back in the day that were all jazzed up to invest like $200/mo in the market when they literally had $10K of credit card debt losing 17-20% per year......logically it makes no sense.....

Everyone's financial situation is different which is why it is nice to have a number of options for purchasing equipment etc.

But what do I know......

Very well stated.

Reflects what Jethro was saying about separation.

Thanks guys, was just trying to offer up some of the very real considerations that should be accounted for when thinking about making a large purchase. It isn't as simple s "if you have the cash use cash" and if you have to finance something it is because you really cannot afford the purchase. The world of finance and leverage combined with the tax implications for each person's situation are all major factors that should come into play.

I get as laugh out of people buying tractors. One. they really don't know what they want and two they want the absolutely lowest price and are will to travel hundreds of miles to get it, bypassing any local dealer in the process... BUT, if the unit needs serviced or has a warranty issue or needs repaired and the owner is incapable of doing it..

They take it to the local dealer they screwed out of the initial purchase because they wanted it at a low ball price, but then they whine because that dealer puts them behind their valued customers who deal with that dealer, buy their units there and support that dealer.

Viscous circle perpetuated by greed on the buyers part. I find it amusing.

Carry on...

I tend to agree but let me give you some insight on my local Kubota dealer. Not a lot of 50HP range 4wd tractors in my area. Used is pretty high. I found a 2002 Kubota M6800 w/loader @ Ohio border for $20800.00 del with only 317 hrs. Simple gear shift with only one rear remote. My local dealer said I overpaid yet he had a Cat/badged massey with almost 1000 hrs Model 297 for $24500.00 and was no where near the tractor a M6800 is.
