I don’t know. I’ve never had any that was just dirt.

I've been casually observing constructions sites daily quite a bit over the past few years. Buildings around 5 stories, but not houses.
Tracked excavators are almost exclusively used to dig the holes. Several of different sizes at any given time. And at least one seems to stay on site until the job is done.
They almost always load directly into dump trucks. Sometimes there's a wheel loader on site, but more times than not, nope.
There's usually one dozer on site to grade the ramp into the hole, and to push dirt up a stockpile if they're keeping it on site.
Once the hole is dug, a crane of some type is usually on site for the duration. But after that, without a doubt, the most used piece of equipment is a telehandler. They do the majority of the work once the foundation is set until the exterior is done. Pretty much everything on the site gets moved with the telehandlers. Steel, lumber, bricks, appliances, HVAC equipment, drywall, windows, doors. Everything.
When everything is buttoned up and the exterior is done, a wheel loader and dozer reappear and either move the stockpile or take dirt from delivering dumptrucks.
As far as houses go, as others have mentioned, after an excavator digs the hole, it's a tracked loader, a small excavator, maybe a telehandler on a larger house, and that's about it.
