Just had a look at the diagram.
A thought.
If the roll pin , item 7, was broken that would explain your symptoms.
I'll add that I incurred a similar situation (roll pin) on my 4wd shifter (on a different tractor).
Replaced the pin some 6 years ago and no further problems.
My big feet (and cramped cockpit) brought on my problem.
