Appellate Court Affirms Liability in North Carolina Nuisance Case

I had an acquaintance who owned his own business back in the 70's and 80's. He had a couple limos, a couple hearses, and he'd clean up death scenes. Natural causes, homicides, accidents, etc.... So let's say uncle Moss dies in his house in the middle of July, and around the end of August the neighbors report a stench.... after the police are through investigating, he'd go in, remove the body to the morgue, funeral home, wherever it had to go. Then if requested, he'd clean up the puddle around the Lazy Boy where uncle Moss was found, and use chemicals to remove the stench and sanitize the areas affected. Then he'd recommend contractors to replace the damaged floor, walls, etc... whatever needed to be replaced.

It was an interesting business. He said he always felt like he was helping a family through a hard time. Quite compassionate man.

I owned a big coffee shop 20 years ago and downstairs was a college bar, classic rathskeller. Owner was deep into drugs and finally did himself in.

I met the guy who does just what you described, cleans up crime scenes. You don't really think about it but, someone's gotta do it.

Always a side story. A while ago a list of funny things written on bathroom walls was going around. One of the published sayings was.......No matter how good looking she is, some one hates her........or something like that.

My coffee shops water shut off was in his men's room. Sure enough, there was that published saying on his wall. I asked the bar owner if someone was a copycat and he said nope, it was the original and people actually come by only to see the saying on the wall.

Frigging lightening and thunder storm and down pour in December in NC? It just never stops!

I was stationed near Panama City Florida. I was riding my bicycle in the area and rode near some kind of pulp wood processing plant. That smell was enough to make me gag, and on a bicycle you can't get away from it very fast. (I had a route in mind and didn't want to back track)

Welcome to northern New England pre-1980 or so. Paper/pulp mills were big business here then. Most of them are gone now, mainly economics. Don't miss the smell, but unfortunately the economy of many of those mill towns never recovered.

We've been seeing that here since the virus first came about; people would read how ICUs in their state were full, and how many extra beds we were expected to have. First it was people with summer homes on the lakes coming back. Then all summer real estate sold like hot cakes while anyplace on/near the water sells almost as soon as it's listed, for about 25% more than it would have a year ago. It put the kiboshes to my plan of owning a place on the water when I retire.

We've been seeing the same thing here. Not a lot of new construction (yet), but a lot of dumpy vacant houses are being snarfed up by city people and renovated.

The question is, how long will they remain here once the virus has been contained? Between the slow internet, relative lack of town services, restaurants, shopping, night life, etc. I'd imagine a large percentage will go back to "civilization". I hope those who stay have left their city attitudes behind.

PSS: Oosik, there aren't many things which stink worse than rotting potatoes. I had a bag go bad this fall and it almost drove me out of the house until I found the source. And to think that vodka used to be my favorite hard liquor...

Yeah, they are pretty nasty.
Surprised no one's mentioned oil fields as a source of foul odor. Took a road trip thru Oklahoma years ago, it was pretty bad.

As long as you can smell a paper mill, a cattle feed lot, hog farm, turkey and chicken ranch etc. the community is good shape. "No smell no economy"

My Dad always had the same idea. He owned a store near the Houston ship channel. There was also a paper company near the Washburn Tunnel we passed frequently. Whenever we complained about the smells, he always reminded us that almost all his customers worked at those plants, yards and factories. If not for them we would not have food on the table.

Nothing like a peaceful, country ride on my motorcycle. Enjoying all of Mother Nature and her scenery. Then you motor past a rotting creature in the roadside ditch. Some times it's so bad - you can taste it.

Several years ago I was bush hogging a field that was 5 to 6 ft high and I couldn't see a thing. Ran over an old, rotting deer carcass... Man, I thought I was gonna puke for sure. Took months for that smell to leave the bush hog.

I can sure relate to those common odors from that Champion Paper Mill, having grown up in Pasadena, Texas, aka "Stink-A-Dina". We always knew well ahead of time when a 'northerner' was starting to blow in. With the old Crown Oil Refinery catching fire on a regular basis, people in that area welcomed the Washburn Tunnel as a fast way to get in front of the foul odors and fire danger - other than the Sinclair Oil Refinery blowing up on a regular time scale as well.

...Good Times? nah... just Old Times but never forgotten.
