I was trying to hold back but....i can't. Govt pensions........

20 year retirement but don't forget, i think they get credit if they were in the service. Go in at 17, retire at 37. Is this a great country or what? Maybe work in a little disability.

Our only hope is the many many trillions of dollars of unfunded pensions. Although the apparently limitless ability to print money seems to be a short term stop gap?

In my state, your age and years of service have to add up to 90 before you are eligible to retire...so I guess you could retire after 20 years if you start at age 50.

These should be in the dust bin of history. Receiving a government pension at 37 ?

My uncle got drafted in WWII, spent 20 years in the Navy. Retired with a pension. Got another job with Naval Intelligence as a civilian, worked another 20 years and got a 2nd pension. I've worked with many people that put in 20 years in the military, retired, and then got a job working for the same companies I worked for. I begrudge them nothing. They earned it.

But they probably don't HAVE to take it at 37. They can get another government job and start another pension plan, stay long enough to get vested and do it allover again with another agency. That first pension gets bigger the longer you wait. Really good if you wait until 'normal retirement age' to start the draw. So does each successive one.

Have a cousin who did this with a City, a different City and then a County. Draws 3 pensions. The State of Texas allows state employees to retire and draw their retirement then go back to work for the State.

The sympathy I once had, long ago, for government employees and their pay situation has dried up.

My dad retired from the Air Force after 22 years service, he was 40. Now, 85 and been collecting his pension for 45 years... He told me not long ago it's something like $780,000 in retirement pay; PLUS the health benefits... Not a bad gig overall, of course we didn't have diddly squat when I was a kid.... :confused3:

I don't begrudge military retirees their pensions. They earned every cent and then some.

A few scammers but not that many.

I have worked with a lot of retired military over the years.

Agreed... what I left out was his 4 one year tours over seas, including Nam in 68. He paid a lot of dues... I think any career military person does.

Used to be, work for govt, you trade salary for bennies and job security.

Now they get paid more than private sector in many cases.

Friend just retired from VA, nurse. She loved the old men and hated the system. I asked why she didn't work private sector.

33% pay cut ........... plus plus plus

VA full of "Professionals" lost their Licenses. Long as dey had license when hired dey keep working for VA.

NY got so bad went to Tiered retirement system. Old employees in Tier 1 & 2 sold out new hires in 3, 4 & 5 to keep der sweet deals when Union cut new contract. Funny how dat Union brotherhood works. Some dem poor retirees now can leave work at 45, but don't get checks till 55. Math don't work but politician who sposta work for taxpayer got his and left town.

Best one in NY Assemblyman retired at 72 & took pension, den got elected again to get more money + health care for life. Too sick to campaign or drive to Albany & back but he could do job from laptop at house.

System should explode soon. Be funny to watch.
