I preferred old Winters..... tended to stay cold, instead of the constant temperature cycling more typical now........ great if you are in a Test Lab running shaker tables in enviro chambers, not so much if it's your gear in your yard.

I've got various projects I need to get caught up on during the Holidays; maybe you'll get some time soon shaeff to put the gen in the doghouse....

Hopefully nobody needs their gen over the holidays, but wishing smooth running if you do :santahat:

so as not to tempt fate and other drug users, I put a 1/2 inch covered braided chain around the gen frame and the main
electrical piping. If they try to tear it off, well, ya know there might be something live in there for a real Darwinian situation.
Problem is for thirty bucks you can buy a Chinese bolt cutter that will go through that 1/2 inch cable like a hot knife through butter.
But then it's a few more laws they have broken and will have to stand account for at some point in a court of law.
Unless justice was pronounced by the court of the live wire. For most people, crime does not, has not and will not pay .

What I need on it is a camera, hundred bucks for a game cam in the eaves.
since with a 1000 dollar deductible on my homeowners policy, it would pay me to
be more careful. Thankfully this is not a high crime neighborhood
with the police dept across the street and down a block or two.

Ounce of Prevention..... anything to slow down something rolling away.........

Got thinking.... must be readily available monitoring hardware (standalone) that ties into wifi..... here's one example:

Basement Watchdog WiFi Module | Basement Watchdog

Never used that product, but you get the idea....... just run a set of dry contacts back to the module in a sheltered location...... text/alarm to phone etc if something happens.....

Another thing to add to my project list..... handy for my sump pump and other things around here.....

I started my small L70 Yanmar diesel which has set for several months this weekend.
After warming the grid heater for 5 seconds it fired on the second turn. Amazing little engine always starts smoothly even in single digit temps.
After a warmup at reduced speed I put a 3kw load in it for 40 minutes HZ were between 59.5 & 60.5 no load to 3kw.
This is a special long run version with an extra deep 3 qt sump with bypass filter.

Built for the very long run.

First small Yanmar I came across was on my buddy's sailboat. Was impressed with how easy it was to start with a crank handle, and its minimal use of fuel. Reliable backup is valuable, but esp. so if you are in the middle of a ocean !

If one wanted the best most powerful portable gasoline gen, looks like Honda does make a bigger fuel injected
engine, a Vtwin 779 cc:
Winco 24016-001 WL16000HE-03/A- 14,000 Watt Electric Start Fuel-Injected Portable Generator w/ Honda iGX V-Twin 49-State
noisy but looks like it would put out a lot of power for extended periods

anyone know Honda engines? Is the 779 a stroked/bored version of the 690? Had it all along in some other application?
Honda has been doing fuel injection a long time. Cars, outboards, motorcycles, so unlikely any modern engine
of theirs will underperform.
Looks like a primo motor and I'm sure the gen is higher spec too.
Now put it in a box...or a pickup truck bed.

At 504lbs , “portable” is kind of relative.

This was the automatic standby generator that I put together about 20 years ago, the generator end was a 4 pole Dayton that turned 1800 RPM, I used a belt reduction to let the engine turn fast enough to power the generator, ended up at about 2800 engine rpm to get 1800 at the generator.

After 20 years the generator failed. The engine was still fine, it ran on propane it’s whole life. Now it’s burning gasoline and powering my friends lawn tractor. Honda engines are hard to beat.

I doubt I’ll get twenty years out of the 22kw Generac that replaced it, but you never know......

I've put my 7kw into the back of my van by myself, but I wouldn't want to try that 14 !

The description of that Winco lists lifting eye, but I didn't notice it in the pics..... for that kind of weight, I'd want to be able to sky-hook it, even if it had wheels.

Happy New Years guys, here's to a better 2021 !
