My German exchange student and I went to the Community College Saturday Swap meet and an elderly gentleman had his table set-up and as we were walking by said he was making deals today...
My student quickly replied she doesn't buy trash... Europeans tend to be direct and English isn't her first language... in other words a tactless reply.
The fellow was not quite sure he heard what he heard and asked... I quickly grabbed her hand and said "No Cash" as trash and cash sounding similar... and placated the situation.
We moved down a little and she said why did you lie... and I said why did you hurt the old man's feelings?
Then I was getting a lecture on Americans are afraid to say what they think... and so it went and I said one's trash is another's treasure...
She was a stunningly beautiful young lady and one would not have expected her being blunt and direct.
