Here is a nice video of the EDGAR SPEER while downbound at Port Huron in the St Clair river this past past summer. Trivia question. What is the heater/furnace used for on the rear right corner of the Speer?? Maybe a BBQ?

Oh come on, no guesses for my boat trivia qestion?? 😆

Many boats run what called "bunker fuel" which is less refinned and thick at normal temps. Its less costly than diesel but needs to be kept warm. I believe there is heating lines within there tanks.

Interesting. And I suppose the heater runs on the same fuel? I feel like there is a perpetual motion machine in there somewhere

Copied off the internet. (so it most be true!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bunker fuel is any fuel used on board a ship.

The most commonly used type on ships is residual fuel oil bunker or Bunker C.

Grades of Bunker fuel

  • Bunker C - The most common form of bunker. Composed primarily of vac resid range material, with a high viscosity that requires heating in order to pump. Typically sold at several viscosity specifications: 180 centistoke, 380 centistoke, or 460 centistoke, with 380 being the most common grade. The viscosities are measured at 50C, the typical heated temperature of the fuel

Interesting. 50C is much warmer than I would have thought! Is the entire fuel tank kept warm or only the fuel on its way to the engine? How much fuel does one of these ships carry?
