Does anyone have any experience adding a winch to a 2 wheel drive tractor? Sometimes I do dumb stuff. I have never been stuck crossing a creek, I lock the differential. I do not want to be calling a tow truck or back hoe to pull me out if I do get stuck.

Electric winches are designed for "recovery" not for every day projects like log skidding and general work, that said, a electric winch can save you when you get stuck, what is important is determining what size winch you may need to recover you tractor from its "stuck" position, maybe a 3500# or 5000# or 9000# winch may be needed.... Main aspect of using electric winch for recovery is how robust is you tractors electrical system, questions that need answers is what is amperage output of alternator/generator and how big (CCA) is you battery.... Also consider distance you may need to pull to get unstuck, the longer the pull the more strain on tractors electrical system... A really good winch and a really stuck tractor can put up to 200-300 amp draw in electrical system during winching operation... Year or so ago I was crossing a seasonal creek and absolutely stuck my 4WD SCUT and had to get my Jeep with 10,000# winch on it to pull tractor free... Lots of strain on winch, pull actual slid 4500 pound Jeep across the dirt until I blocked all 4 wheels and progress was slow for first couple of feet (stain on Jeeps electrical system (100 amp alternator and 900 CCA AGM battery)), I mention this because yes winch can be your savior but there is a lot of variable involved in any situation...

I built an hydraulic winch myself, exactly for the same reasons. Sometimes I have to do some brush mowing for someone else on ground I don't know, with hidden holes, creeks, etc that the tractor can get stuck. Usually there is no way to get on those places, other than with a tractor. I would just attach the winch to a tree and get out of there.

So I decided to build a winch and mount it on the front of the tractors. It's literally one of the best things I ever made. It has came so handy for some many tasks. I've pulled trees when cutting so it doesn't fall on the wrong side, I've stretched fence wire, I've pulled cars that weren't running. The list goes on and on. Interestingly enough, I've never got stuck and used it that way.

I have a 4 wheel drive tractor (Kubota L235) around 2000# - when you get a 4 wheel drive stuck, it's really stuck and I've done that once and no longer get into those situations. However, recently, I did put an electric winch on the front of my tractor for infrequent winching. It's a 2500# ATV winch that I bolted to the part of the frame that carries the suitcase weights. You do have to watch the current draw, but so far I've only pulled 2 logs out of the forest. It's there Just-in-case since I'm a lot farther from help than I used to be.

I too am planning a winch for the front of my Yanmar for similar reasons, to get me out of trouble. I have a nice 9K winch sitting in the garage and I came across this winch mount that will provide a nice starting point. In my Jeep I have it setup with a dual post high CCA battery and has performed well over the years.

I've got my M6040 "stuck" exactly two times. Both times - due to slick clay like ground. The tires loaded up and we went nowhere.

Both time I pulled myself out with a manual cable come along and use of the bucket on the FEL.

All my adult life I've owned one type or other vehicle with a winch. An electric winch can be a God send OR it can become a real PITA. They can put a tremendous strain on the vehicle electrical system and can/will fry components in less than a heart beat.

Just be certain that you know what you are doing and don't complicate situations with cheap components.

Really nice looking work there!
Would like to utilize the PTO transmission on my Ram for a bumper mount hydraulic winch, but it would cost mega $$$
Tractor winches much better since the cleated R1’s less prone to sliding.
I have a winch on my Rubicon, but it lacks the azz to pull anything really heavy.

There was a fellow with a 1945 Dodge Power Wagon in our 4WD club. It had a front bumper mount PTO driven winch. It had POWER beyond compare. It was also slower than molasses in January. The setup was OEM.

For that matter the Power Wagon itself was slow. IIRC - it topped out at around 45 mph.
