Troy-Bilt Horse-1, Tecumseh 8hp Air Filter Replacement

Got the above at an auction. The air filter that was in the vertical chromed can was a total mess and not a proper replacement. From looking a the owners info it seems that the tiller originally came with a foam w/ oil filter.
I hope to replace the mess that was on the tiller with an appropriate paper air filter. Will someone please tell me what air filter replacements (brand/model) have worked for them.

Are you sure it's Horse with 8 hp Tecumseh engine?

I thought they were using 6 hp Tecumseh, 7 hp Kohler and 8 hp Briggs engines.

Thanks for the manuals, I'll see if they shed any light. I called T_B tech and from my serial number and FWIW the gal definitively ID'd my tiller as a Horse1. After looking at the offered Horse 1 manual she sent, I was indeed confused by the 6 and 7 HP being the only options mentioned and in list chatter on engine replacement, the 8HP option was somehow not approved for the older Horse1. ??? Something to do with the metal the tranny was made from?

Anyhow, the Kleen-Aire filter that came on my unit was apparently a oil soaked foam thing, and I was hoping to get a modern paper filter to replace it. No luck finding anything that fits so far at auto parts stores. Perhaps the old oil soaked foam would be superior to a paper filter? No experience with that old tech, but it would be messy for sure. In that my tiller does not look to be set up like what is pictured in the manuals I've seen so far, I'm not sure zactly what model I've got. I've got 8HP Tecumseh with black plastic gas tank mounted level with top on port side of engine, Kleen-Aire filter on opposite side of engine. The filter has a chromed cover with a wing nut on top. Muffler is not a straight out one, but is rather built in a dog-leg shape with the exit hole above and to the rear of the actual exhaust port. Further research is obviously needed ...... Still hoping some list member has already sussed this out and can shed light. I'll report back if I get any good data from T_B itself.

On my 70's model Craftsman walk behind, front tines rototiller, is the Briggs 8 HP engine. And it has the oil soaked foam air filter. It still works fine even to this day. I just service it or replace it every ten years or so.

Good to know. An oil soaked foam has got to be effective and simple technology. Likely just to messy for folks when given the option of a paper element. I finally got what looks to be the proper part number for what I need. Unfortunately it is unobtanium locally and I'll have to order. For MY setup it's Tecumseh #34700. O'Rielly has what looks to have a compatible unit, #7-02719. Having issues with the big A right now and can't get images of the filters offered, but there seems to be possibilities there too.

Sounds like you are on the right track. But I recently found a site (www.fix.com) that gave me good service/parts on an old snow blower. The service was good.

Looked at the site, thanks, and they list a couple of filter options, but as with anywhere else I've seen something listed, there is not picture, measurements or description beyond "it fits". Must be pornographic or something ;' > Have to call ....

I have a 8hp Briggs (from the 70's) on a Chipper Shredder. It used a oil soaked filter that self destructed when i went to take it off (probably never removed and cleaned ever). I ended up taking the housing to the local Lawn and garden shop and asking what they had on the shelf back there that might work. After some trial and error fittings I ended up with a paper filter that worked. No idea what the part number was or is but you might have the same success by that as well. You just need a parts counter person who isn't crazy busy and will spend some time with you.

If I cold see what I was ordering on the big A I might have gone that way, but failing that I put an order in online from O'Reilly's for what is a part number match to what I got from T-B itself, 34700. We shall see.... The dimensions are about right for my setup, whichever actual iteration of the horse-1 I have.

It would be helpful if you find out what is the Tecumseh engine model and include a photo or two if possible.

Model No. is stamped on the engine shroud, but if it is an older cast iron one it's probably Tecumseh HH80

My Horse like that had a paper filter with an oiled foam filter that went over the paper filter. It worked great.

Judging from what is on the filter cover that is what I have on my tiller. Does not the oil get into the paper on the filter and plug it up? Are your foam element of the same material that most filter covers seem to be made of these days, or is it denser?

You just wash the foam filter cover with soap and water. Let dry, put A FEW drops of motor oil on it, squeeze it into a ball a few times to distribute the oil and then put over the paper filter. Not much oil can get on the paper because there isn't that much to begin with. It's a very effective filter.

I used to wash the foam filter maybe every couple years and re-oil. It trapped all the bigger dirt. Just a couple drops of oil and squeeze to distribute. No big deal. It's just a thin, lightweight foam typical of foam of today.

Got a Horse here with 8hp. Tec. on it ---even got letric starter on it ---Motor is the biggest POS ever made! Wont run at all now---looks like some morph carb on it and I cant find a new one to put on it.
Found several but they are totaly different design and wouldnt fit!
My other 7 Horses have 7 hp either Kohlers, or B & S on them.

You likely won't find a new one that fits anyway. You'll find a bigger one and you can cut it, hand sew to the right size and use that. No big deal.
