Great lake boats, a good video

Cleaning out unused old files I found some lake boats photos you guys might like. These are fishing boats tied up at Black River Harbor which is just north of Ironwood MI. This is all different operations and one "three sons" is the family we buy our fish from.

Those used to be so common down on this end of Lake Michigan. Now you're lucky to see one on a scrap heap rotting in the weeds. No commercial fishers left down here as far as I know.

The Kahlensberg diesel engines that powered the majority of the fish tugs are pretty simple but impressive and used to be made in Two Rivers WI.

Boy! Those fishing boats look like tough SOB's and can probably handle almost any kind of weather!

They have and can be used to break ice. The crew works inside the hull, where they are somewhat protected from the waves and weather. There's a couple neat museums in fish tugs on Washington Island Wi, and Beaver Island Mi.

One of the Peterson's boats on ice. (three sons) These folks live hard lives.. They've told us a few stories. The boats are completely enclosed because its normally cool out there.

The few I've been in have a small oil fired or coal stove for heat. Lake Michigan, several miles out, isn't that fun to pleasure boat in til later in June because of the cold water temps.

That 2nd picture reminds me of being a very little kid on a 4 car ferry crossing Diamond Lake (Cassopolis, MI) to and from the island as a kid. The water sparkled like diamonds and so I thought that's why they called it Diamond Lake.
