Here is the Mesabi Miner arriving at Sturgeon Bay WI for winter layup. Lots of tugs at work here.

The Lee Tregurtha seen arriving in Superior WI on January 13, 2022 for winter layup. The two tugs assisting look different because they are from different companies. Because of thrusters, tugs have become less used and sit most of the time until the ice season. I did not see the Lee using his thrusters. I loved the sound of his prop, just at the water level.

Burrrr. It’s cold outside.

Prolonged low temperatures around the Great Lakes means they’re freezing over.

An animation from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) shows the growing ice coverage from Dec. 3 when there was almost no ice to Jan. 31 when the five lakes were 40% frozen over.

Here’s the current ice cover by lake:

• Lake Erie: 94%
• Lake Huron: 54%
• Lake Michigan: 31%
• Lake Ontario: 28%
• Lake Superior: 25%

Arly.. Think you mean 'Lake Erie' but I do know an 'Eric' who is a block head, not sure it's ice however. Erie is shallow and treacherous in the summer too.
