So what is the next step after that picture? Gather it up and chip? Burn? Just wondering. Jon

Burning is legal there and the fire danger is close to zero to that’s the plan. The brush is the easier part. There’s still stumps in that mess that’s the harder part to deal with.

I have growing interest in land clearing, but I couldn’t imagine starting another business with all the equipment.
I will have to be content with renting and using what I have.
Its really not a bad gig. No repairs, insurance, or equipment storage.
They have a “tree guy” they like and I think they said he didn’t want the work!
I do like clearing land to be used by me later for farming.
I think that would have been a good one to jump into the end of '19, not sure I'd jump now if interest rates go up this year like they predict. I think it would be a fun job though.

I’m working on cleaning up 25 acres for a future development. I need a bigger trackhoe but there’s not a lot to be had and after I find a bigger trackhoe I’ll probably sell my 410 backhoe and get a dozer. View attachment 732180
Oooof, you got a big'ol mess right there.

My brother and his sons log in Northern Michigan and use a Ponsse processor. Like this.

Whole tree processor in that it cuts at the stumps, lays it down, strips off the branches while cutting the trunk to lengths. Kind of like the Russel unit above, in post 36. Jon
All the different processors are amazing, I saw an eight wheeled one that had independent hydraulics on the wheels so you could "step" over anything fragile or turn etc.

I would not want to be a mechanic on any of them, can't imagine how much maintenance they must require.

What they paid me is petty cash to them. These are extremely wealthy, generous people.
I am “different” when it comes to the trending view of wealthy people. I am thankful for them and wouldnt be where I am without them. Wealthy people spend money and create jobs.
This customer in particular is very generous, trusting and conscientious.

Gorgeous.

Would they be interested in adopting a 69-year-old big kid? I'm potty trained and everything!

I look around these peoples properties and sometimes it’s hard to focus on the task. Too much man made and natural beauty…

So here we are in a holding pattern waiting for the last 4 days straight of rain to dry out a little. Should have a JD-450 dozer here Thursday to begin leveling out whats left and pulverizing the stuff thats too rotted to run through chipper.

Snapped a quick pic today. We have plenty of chips, too.

Looking at your before/after pictures - makes my back ache. I thin and chip my pine stands - almost annually. Anything 6" or smaller. Roughly 1200 small pines each time.

That represents a BIG project for me.

Funny you mention “back ache”. 2 of us hurt our backs (me for one of them) pretty bad. I had just come off a 3 week injury and now my back is just beginning to recover from the chipping work.

Nice work! For similar jobs I’ve seen people use a mulched head on an excavator to chip in place (well it more shreds but makes quick work of piles). Very expensive equipment though
